Forums - Gaming - Modernize them?

Shantae was a recent excellent example to me of improving a series. It allowed scaling of difficulty and was better about hinting what a player needed to do next.

Next to open world, I think RPG elements such as leveling or allocating skill points is common practice. It injected whole in life into Castlevania for me in Symphony of the Night.

What do you mean by that?

The idea behind retro games is such that they look and play like retro games.  Removing the retro gamplay just makes it a pixelated modern game.

But this IS what the new retro games are. Pixelated modern games.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

Considering the top rated game on the PS4 is Persona 5, I think the "critics only like open world" narrative in the OP can be dismissed.

It's also proof that a classic genre can be modernized and brought forward to good success without losing its essence.
