Well, they did change some stuff in Deluxe (Double items, Boo, adding a third drift), so it might feel easier because of that.

I've sensed it getting easier as well, at least in offline mode.

Easier offline mode? Maybe I should buy it after all.

I believe the AI rarely goes for ultra mini-turbos so perhaps that, but most likely it's cause you've gotten better since playing the original like KLAMarine said. The real challenge has always been against other players, so think of the Grand Prix mode as just a warm-up before you go online.
