Maybe one of the big reasons is, its English only, not even german, france, italian, spanish etc. subtitles. even i dont like it, when i cant have german subtitles in (story) games. I mean i play almost all of the games in english (voices) or in the native language its made, because thats always the best option, but even i must say i really dont like it when i cant have at least subtitles in my language (voices, menu and all that stuff). A lot of people dont want to buy a game if they dont even have subtitles in their language and since Persona is a niche franchise its even worse in this case. And i really dont get why in all the sales charts you are surprised about Persona 5 sales, like what did you expect its gonna sell millions of millions!? Hell no. |
Okay, thanks, I wasn't aware that there were no subtitles outside of English and Japanese. Was the bolded meant for me? Probably not, but just in case, I certainly didn't have high expectations for Persona 5, that's why I found it so surprising that it seems to have relatively done quite well in the US and the UK and hasn't seen a similar boost in the rest of Europe. The lack of localization you wrote of sounds like a big culprit, though.

Nah that was more in general and i mean it seems like sales are (a lot?) better than Persona 4 so i think the game has done extremely well so far. And yeah localization is actually really important for a lot of people also for me, but if a game is not in german or only in english it still wont stop me from playing it, but i must say the way i enjoy games the most especially storygames is, if i set the voices to english and the rest to german. For example, imo the german voices are terrible in there and i saw a lot of other people say "Play the game in english, german is terrible!" And i have to agree with that, but my brother played or still is playing Horizon Zero Dawn in german and hes fine with that and i know another friend who also always wants to play games in german and that seems to count for a lot of people, when there mother language is not english and almost all games are obviously made in english.
Or Yakuza Zero is a great example, which is made in japanese and it "only" has english subtitles, but the voices are japanese i watched (english) streamer play the game and i saw a lot of people being lets say pissed of why the game is not in english, do i really have to read subtitles all the time, what is this weebsh*t and stuff like that. You can say thats also Twitchchat being Twitchchat, but a lot of people really feel like that and i think you know what i want to say. I know and i think most people know, when there motherlanguage is not english, that english obiously is the Worlds 1st language or i dont know how to call it and in most countries like also in mine you learn english, some people can speak it really good, some like me i would say really really basic english and its just fine, others dont even learn english, but even if a lot of people can understand/speak english they still want games or things in general, in their mother language of course.
So yeah localization is indeed really important in games and also all the other stuff like movies/series etc. , just think about if all the movies/series would be english only, they would make a lot less money i believe. God damn why didnt this came earlier to my mind, that was a way better and shorter example, having movies etc. in german is almost a must for me, otherwise i wouldnt watch a lot of them.^^ i now feel kinda sorry that you had to read that much and also if my english is not the best and really basic like i mentioned. Im more of a readerguy anyway here and usually dont write long sh*t like this :D Okay i just shut my mouth now haha
