Forums - Sony - Is Sony the perfect first party publisher for Spiderman with Insomniac?

So far in terms of care who is the best third party publisher for Superhero or Fantasy game IP? Its obviously Warner bros. Now if a third party like them was not able to pull off the ip,  who from first party would it be to publish and allow a game the just time it deserves to become great? Its obviously Sony. You've seen Sony's studio Sucker Punch and you've seen their other action adventure games. This could be the best Spiderman game since Spierman 2. With Insomniac at the helm...when they are working side by side with Sony, the magic we've seen since the PS2 era will happen once more. Insomniac knows how to handle a fun loving character like Spiderman/ Peter Pqrker. If Sonys first party is any indication, this should be a blockbuster of a game. The Ratchet and Clank remake and and Ratchet and Clank movies shows just how much Sony believes in and Insomniac and their development skills.  If the budget is large enough, this could be insomniacs biggest game yet. Unlike EA, Activision and Microsoft, I am sure Sony will give them their space and will actually give creative input from their various other studios to make sure the quality level is high. I also hope Mr. Holland does the voice overs (with the other cast to make this more memorable).  This could be Sonys shot to prove they (along with WB studios) are one of the best Super hero game publishers. :)

That and lets hope Suckerpunch makes another new IP based on superheroes as well. I cannot wait for the gameplay reveal os Spiderman at E3. Sony and their second party relationship with Insomniac is legendary. Almost as legendary as Nintendo and Rare.

I guess? Sony is willing to believe in single player games with a story.
So as long as they don't force multiplayer into it and pull a Scalebound.

Its not not just that they are willing, it was their mission statement when entering the console race. I saw a short documentary back in the PS3 era about their relationship with Insomniac and they were talking about Sonys goal of making Story driven and pixar-like games.  Its their bread and butter and what they do well. If you notice, all of the studios they acquired some years back all have the same mission statement.

True, but publisher was patient and talented enough to deal with the licensed character outside of Warner Bros, who do you think could handle it?

Trailer looked really good. One of the reasons I finally bought a PS4 actually. But... good trailers don't always mean good games.

Btw, isn't Insomniac a third party now?

Lets see... For a Spider-man game? Let's look at some devs past games that had a sort of open world super hero style:

Insomniac - Sunset overdrive - OK-ish

Sucker Punch - Infamous - First one was good. Second Son was overrated mediocrity, but First Light was legit.

Avalanche/Eidos - Just Cause - They all been really good, especially the second one.

Volition - Saint Rows 4 - This one is great, come on. Only competition for Just Cause 2. And they may nail the humor better than most.

Traveller's Tales - Lego Marvel Super Heroes- This one is much better than you think. Very funny too.

Realtime Worlds - Crackdown - Better than anything on Sony's side of course, but not really on par with third party efforts. Crackdown 2 was made by another studio, so no penalty.

Conclusion
Nintendo is always the best, anyways. So who cares?

They are still second party for Sony. Sunset Overdrive was never Sony's IP so they got Microsoft to publish it since Sony wouldnt. They are still making an exclusive IP for Sony since Sony studios has the licensing rights to Spiderman movies and games. They are in a deal with Marvel Studios right now so Spiderman could be in the Avengers.

No offense, but Volition have nothing on Sonys devs, specially on a story driven open world level.  Microsoft has never created a new IP in house or even second party on par with even Infamous. I dont even haven to go further up the list. With that said, I hope Volition makes Crackdown a major player, because Microsoft needs it right now. I could also use a different style of third person shooter on my Xbox right now. Lets hope the real time destruction is balanced out well with the single player too. Im hoping they prove me wrong.
