Use the break while you're drifting.

Just got my last 2 golden trophies for 200cc and unlocked golden mario. What a pain this mode is.

First off, consider switching to a lighter character/Kart. Up to 150CC heavy characters are the best because they have the highest top speed, but in 200CC you're not going full speed at all times, so the advantage is minimized. The acceleration of lightweights is possibly more useful, plus they handle better.

Second, you need to use your breaks, especially while drifting. This will slow you down so that you can take corners instead of flying through them, and will let you use red and purple boosts more often.

From what I saw, you tend to waste items when you're in first place. Koopa shells and bananas can be held behind your kart to protect your ass from incoming shells.

Signature goes here!

This looks far easier than MK7 when trying to get 3 stars, in MK7 the laps are waaay too long even in 150cc so you always end up without items to defend your first place, this just takes like 1 minute per lap...
