Forums - Sales - has nintendo ever lost money 1 finanscal year or will it happen

I think I saw that table in some thread at neogaf, but the important sources are the companies financial reports as I said.

However, I doubt the table is adjusted for inflation. It is however a good indication of the relative success of the three companies at making money.

Yes it will happen. I obviously don't know when it will happen, but I reckon it will.

Nintendo is a one trick pony - gaming devices - and while very good at it, if the gaming market collapses at any point (which I think it will - most, if not all markets collapse at some point as gaming did circa 1983) Nintendo will be an inevitable loser and may/will loose big time.

Sony and Microsoft on the other hand, if/when the gaming market collapses, will fair better because they are diversified, although I appreciate that isn't the question being asked.

I am largely platform agnostic. I fail to understand why some people get overly fanboyish about what is an inanimate piece of electronics that's obsolete even before it's launched, when there are far more important things to champion, such as preventing environmental destruction or preventing millions of people dying unnecessarily from illnesses. This fact however, doesn’t mean I am not someone who doesn’t enjoy gaming as a pastime (as I have done for the last 20 years) or doesn’t have a strong interest in how the market is evolving – hence my presence on this site.

Platforms owned – PC, DS, X-Box 360, PS3, PSP and Wii.

I'm not convinced that that's the case.  The collapse then was at least largely a result of things like flooding the market with crappy knockoffs, something that Nintendo has always avoided doing.  A general collapse is possible, but I don't think it would be as extensive as it was then (that was a very young market at the time) and I think that Nintendo would weather the storm better than anyone else.  Obviously the others would be safe to the extent that they could retreat into other markets, but Nintendo would survive and probably come out much more dominant (of a reduced market).

My advice to fanboys: Brag about stuff that's true, not about stuff that's false. Predict stuff that's likely, not stuff that's unlikely. You will be happier, and we will be happier.

lultor, Microsoft and Sony aren't selling their consoles at a loss because they love you. They are trying to recoup their losses via software, accessories, and downloadable content. Whatever we're willing to pay for a console is, at the very least, what it's worth.

If System X costs $1000 to produce, sells for $700, and I refuse to buy it, it's not worth $700 to me.

If System Y costs $150 to produce, sells for $200, and I'm willing to pay that (and then some), which company did a better job?

The company did a better job but the consumers dont gain anything from the company profiting off their money, so why are the fans so happy that they are giving a lot to their company of choice?

Its kind of a contradiction, and some people even go as far as to say x console sux because its selling at a loss. Good on the companys but not necesarily good on the consumers.

Wouldnt everyone be a lot happier if the wii and ds were 50 dollars cheaper? (supply issues aside)

Shareholders do make money from the company's success though, and there are some here. The companies can also develop more games if they make more money, so consumers may benefit too.
