I'm so confused.

PS2 online > PS3?

I don't see how this is surprising, there's only about a dozen Wii games that have online play.

And they say there are more XBL users than online PC gamers? I'd like to know if they're including Steam, because that's where a majority of PC play happens.

It is just saying that the average Xbox 360 owner spends more time playing online than the average PC owner. The article is just ignoring the installed base and instead going for averages.

If anything I'm surprised that the PC is in second on average, since the PC is dominated by casual players who just spend time playing flash games.

Right, so I think PC would be 1st because those flash games are online games.  Also, are you talking about me :)

The Wii has a lot of nice online-enabled applications, including a very good internet browser. I'm sure these things were counted, as opposed to just games.

This is confusing, good for Wii though. Now nintendo needs to work on their online since people are actually using it.

ps2's that aren't the slim version required an addon to go online.  All slims are online capable from the get go. Man that must be alot of people still playing socom and final fantasy online.

Or its a typo and they meant PS3. I find it very hard to believe there are more people playing the very few PS2 online games than the majority of PS3 owners who likely play online games frequently.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

I thought this little snippet fromt the npd release would be a good addition. It shows sample size, etc.

Methodology
Data was collected via an online survey of 20,240 NPD Consumer Panel members ages 2 and older. Respondents age 2-12 were captured via surrogate reporting whereby the female parent (age 21-55) brings her child to computer to answer questions, either with or without parent’s assistance. In order to qualify as an online gamer, respondents had to use one or more of the following systems to play games online: Nintendo DS/DS Lite handheld system, Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Sony PSP handheld system, Xbox, Xbox 360 or PC. Gamers overall (whether online or offline) were included in the study as well. Fieldwork was conducted from January 11 –February 5, 2008.

And another look at the data.

NPD says the number of game-players has grown from its last study, up from 64 percent the year prior. More than half of that 72 percent, says NPD play games online, but relative to "total U.S. population," online gamers have only risen slightly from 40 percent in 2007 to 42 percent.

90 percent of online gamers said the PC was their platform of choice, compared to 19 percent for console and portable systems, and 3 percent for cell phones. Younger players make up a good percentage of online players, with 40 percent of online gamers between 2 and 17, with 18-24 year olds only making up 10 percent.

As for online console players, 50 percent were Xbox 360 gamers, who spent the most time per week playing online compared to PC and PS3 owners. Finally, NPD says only three percent of respondents said they owned two of the three next-gen consoles, and only 2 percent said they owned all three.

No, that's a typo. There can't possibly be that many playing online games with the PS2.

If you goto the link and check the comments someone asks that and they reply saying it's not a typo.

It may well be erroneous reporting.  Basically people saying 'yes my kids play online (PC) and they own a PS2' or parents just giving flatout wrong info.
