You know what's funny is, "Modern Pro Sports History" or "The Modern Era" are terms that are thrown around on shows like Sportscenter all the time, especially as it concerns the discussion of records, and more often than not, those that concern the NHL. I don't think it's actually possible to nail down a time frame for all sports, since the various leagues have had periods of expansion and growth at different time periods. I should have said: Modern NHL history, and even then, my time frame may be off by a bit.

To some what is modern changes. I don't think the sports leagues have given official eras.

Well, it's a fairly loosely defined term to be sure. One that I cannot peg off the top of my head without using the google machine. For the NHL, I'd say around the time the league expanded to 21 teams, or a few years prior to that. Soooo, mid to late 70's? Certainly, making the playoffs when the league was a 6 team operation, should be treated differently than when it was at 21, 24, ect.

A higher percentage of teams made the playoffs during the 21 team era (76%) than during the Original Six era (66%)

Because of the much smaller number of teams, it's much more likely that any one of them would make the playoffs in consecutive years then than it would have been in the 21 team era, regardless of the %. It's more more impressive feat in the "modern era". Especially if one begins to factor in the players obtaining more power and freedom through things like free agency, which facilitated more player movement, and made franchise stability more difficult to maintain.

What is modern will always change.

William Karlsson with one of the slickest goals you will ever see to clinch the Pacific Division for the Golden Knights.

Knights look like they will fall just short of the President's Trophy. Sooooo close though.

What a season for Vegas. Finishing first in their division in their debut season.

Hmm, I don't believe I got a notification for this. It's interesting though that they won their division in only their first season!

I didn't get the notification either.

I love that Vegas clinched their division. So many players havin their best seasons. I hope Haula hits 30 goals. Wish he was still on the Wild.

Well, this is it, I guess. Congrats to Henrik and Daniel for their successful careers. End of an era for the Canucks. I'm almost in tears.

Well, at least we freed up 14 million of cap space, so it's not all that bad I guess...hopefully we can get #1 draft pick now, as well as a whole bunch of younger players.
