Not all about graphics guys. I played resistance 3 recently and it's still my favorite God ever even though the graphics looked bad now. The gunplay and creativity of guns is still awesome!

Any game with "Realistic" graphics will not age well. They always look bad in comparison to future generations.
I think Sunset Overdrive will age very well and retain it's fun factor and great gameplay even in another 2-3 generations It's going to be great to go back and play.

Many people play the old pokemon games countless times and will continue to do so, I mean there are so many youtubers doing current let's plays of older gen Pokemon games spaning over 20 years old right now. There aren't many if any games series you can say that about on that scale. The Pokemon games are games which the graphics might get outdated, but never the gameplay. Even today if you want to complete your pokedex, your going to probably have to go trade them over from an older game. I mean just look at the the success of the re-releases of the 20 year old gen 1 games on the e-shop. They broke e-shop records and sold over 1.5 million in they're first 2 months. |
Sure the first 2 generations aged very well and will probably remain popular. But after that? I don't think many people will care about X&Y in 10 years nor ORAS. Sun and Moon might fare better, haven't tried it yet, so don't know if the new additions are enough to make the game timeless.

all the online multiplayer games... they will all be worthless 10years from now. Single player and story based games age best. |
I couldn't agree more! It was painful for me to see Overwatch winning so many game of the year awards. In 10 years time, people can't play it anymore, or there are so few to play with, that it's worthless.
Games based on realistic graphics which put a lot of priority in graphics age bad most of the time. Games which look more unrealistic and/or which are already no graphical showcase at release but still great age good most of the time.
Many VR games already released will age horrible. If because of gameplay mechanics or graphics.
If games live a lot from that "wow" effect it is often only a "Potemkin" effect and people wouldn't like these games as much if they wouldn't be so amazed by the graphics.
So, games like Horizon will be probably not talked much about anymore in some years and they won't be that good anymore for most people. DriveClub is already seen by many as not so good but it has some fans. I think even these fans will find it not really good anymore in 10 years.
A game like Bloodborne will be probably still liked by many as long as they will play it on a console with a steady frame rate. Same with a game like Persona 5.

And we are WAY past the time where a game that looks good today will look bad tomorrow. That being said, I never really understood "aging" anyway. Good games are good. Bad games are bad. There shouldn't be revisionism about that. People bring up games like The Order as if it wasn't critically panned the second it came out. It won't be memorable, but it's not like people in ten years won't be able to cope with the controls or will consider the visuals an eye sore because of advances in development and technology. |
Metal Gear Solid was a great game because the story and mechanics made you feel in a way games just didn't up until that point. It was as fun to watch as it was to play.
Fast forward to today. Gameplay has evolved and new mechanics have been introduced. It's hard to go back to. Everything from graphics to AI are laughable. To a lesser degree, I found many 6th gen games are now unplayable--most recently, my beloved Resident Evil 4.
It happens but how can we predict?
Age well:
Tearaway Unfolded
The Tomorrow Children
Bloodborne
Overwatch
Nier Automata
Guilty Gear Xrd
Ratchet & Clank
The Last Guardian

It's already outdated compared to Zelda and hopefully we'll get past the fixation on motion blur and bloom all over the screen. For VR games, Rez Infinite will age very well, it already did. Stuff like Robinson is already outdated. All VR games that limit your movement will age very poorly. The sooner the teleport mechanic is forgotten, the better. |
You'd be surprised how outdated BOTW will be with its washed out colors after the next Zeruda comes out and look 10x better.
Especially with all the fog and haze that's going on in the game.

I mean who after all still talks about Skyward Sword's graphics despite looking like this

I honestly can't think of any from the top of my head
Games nowadays age pretty well, and I can imagine myself coming back to many 3DS or Wii U games 10 years from now
though I think Splatoon would be pretty bad in that amount of time because of no online and significant improvements in future installments
What makes a game 'age' for me is when the newer games from the same franchise just improves on what the old games have to offer so a great example for me is Pokemon Red/Blue and Rune Factory 1

Yet it lends itself very well to a remaster like Windwaker HD. The gameplay won't be outdated anytime soon.
It looks better on TV though and in motion. I kinda prefer the look of BotW over Horizon which I'm playing now. Horizon is very focused on near field while BotW has much more wide open landscapes. Horizon looks amazing in screenshots yet the excessive motion blur kinda ruins it in motion together with all the bloom effects. Ofcourse a 60fps remaster of Horizon could fix all that too. Yet the chances of a BotW remaster are much higher.
