Forums - General - Rant about animation

I was skimming through anime openings I never heard to see if there's anything good, and there are comments that seem to really irritate me.

"Lul why dis OP have better animation than show hurhur give likes plz"

Then you have those 5 kids with Sword Art Online profile pictures say "lol omg ikr!?" or some other dumbass thing.

Just seeing people complain about it makes me wonder if they have common sense. Of course a 1.5 minute animation without a one week time limit is gonna look much better! What did you expect? The mona lisa?

I understand if it becomes very choppy for a super long time (as in Rick and Morty choppy), but the criticism against certain shows seems ridiculous. Does no one realize every frame has to be drawn? Or do they think it just magically comes out of nowhere?

(End of rant as I continue to fail in art)

Lol at "every frame has to be drawn".

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Shortcuts definitely exist, but a lot of effort is placed into anime, especially if they don't have all the time in the world.

Anyways, it taking a long time is no excuse. If people think it looks bad, then they think it looks bad, end of. Whether it took 5 seconds or 50 years to make isn't going to change that.

I don't think it's the topic of looking bad. However, it seems like people have unrealistic expectations for shows to match up to the quality of an opening.

That'd be like expecting a movie to stay as interesting as a 2 minute trailer for the entirety of it. Even legendary movies do not pull that off

I don't think most people understand just how much time it takes to make just one minute of high quality animation. Just drawing, cleaning, coloring and shading one frame with the level of detail that you see in most anime takes hours. I honestly don't understand how shows like Naruto can put out an episode every week with no breaks.

The moment you stop expecting people to be reasonable is the moment you'll find your life a great deal less stressful. :)

I just get irked when I see comments like these.

Obviously no one is always right. People on VGChartz always point out things I forgot or never knew. Seems like others live in a brick wall

Animation mostly runs at 8 fps, it's unwatchable to gamers!
But true, those animators are so lazy, that's only 480 drawings per minute.

Ghibli movies have variable frame rate, Nausicaa averages out to 8 fps with 56,078 movie cells while Mononoke averages out at 18 fps for a total of 144,043 movie cells. That was their last traditionally animated movie, newer ones were colored and animated with computers.

You want a high quality 24 minute fluid episode at 24fps, only 34,560 drawings, get going!

Many people delight in criticising, even when they don't much care about the subject to begin with. It's often obvious that they're often perfectly aware that they've put zero thought into their nonsensical comments, but they know they won't be called on it and/or don't care either way.

I tend to just ignore those types as there's little point in discussing it with them. To me, "opinions" of that type hold as much weight as had they sneezed :p

Wasn't ponyo also traditionally drawn and animated because Myazaki wanted to return to a more handcrafted feel? I know for fact that the backrounds for Spirited away were tradidionally drawn with a certain type of guache colors on paper, while parts of the castle in Howl's moving castle are actuall 3D animated and cell shaded.

I mean, it's not like drawing on the computer is significantly easier than on paper anyways. Everything still has to be handdrawn (and colored), it's just faster to go back and correct mistakes as they happen (or fill in big planes of color), but It's not like the computer actually draws the frames for you.
