What about outside Japan? Once FIFA, Minecraft and CoD have moved over it's only really GTA 5 left. That's a lot of revenue disappearing.

I can't tell if this is real or not, but I'm sure those games will continue to sell way better on ps4

I doubt Minecraft will but CoD and FIFA could. That doesn't matter though if people use CoD/FIFA for local on PS4/5 but give Nintendo the cash for online CoD/FIFA/MC/Mario Kart/Brawl/Splatoon/Pokemon/Animal Crossing.

What makes you think people will play fifa or cod just locally on ps4 when they will obviously have the bigger audience? In other words, what makes you think people will jump to switch to play fifa or cod  online when most of them have been playing on ps4 up until now

For the same reason that people who started out paying for XBLive on 360 stopped when they moved over to PS3/4.

CoD/Fifa PS4 offers a better local experience when at home but Switch wins out for online due to it's portability and library of online exclusives.

So let me get this straight...

1. OP thinks only kids play FIFA etc No
2. OP thinks FIFA etc will suddenly start selling better on Switch (3rd party multiplats always dominate Nintendo consoles after all! ) No
3. The kids that do play FIFA etc will somehow be able to convince their parents to buy them two consoles, but not convince them to pay for two online services? Yes. A new console is a one-off. Annual subscriptions are....annual. Nintendo's subscription includes *insert list* as well as Sony's under-18 library.
4. People don't buy PS+ subscriptions for games/sales. AC dominating the February digital sales charts due to it's ¥100 sale for PS+ members almost certainly disproves this It's an added bonus and wouldn't survive without online multiplayer.

1/2. So you recognise that working adults also buy consoles, play games and have both the money and will to pay for multiple subscription services?

3. Annual subscriptions are only annual in the sense that you have to keep buying them. There's no need to actually "subscribe" though. I know when I was a kid a 12 month XBL Gold card was a common birthday/xmas gift. Don't see why that would be any different for today's kids. Plus it also means if they don't use it anymore, no new 12 month card. So it's not necessarily a subscription, just multiple one-off purchases.

4. PS+ did survive without online multiplayer though. It may have been a fraction of the size it is now, but it was still alive.

1/2. Yes but I think they'd resent paying for 2 subscriptions. Working adults are more likely to choose the portable option.

3. It isn't just the sub, it's the game too. Take the next 5 Fifa's for example, that's 5 games and $100 subs on Switch plus the same five games on PS4 plus $200 in subs. I'm sure EA would like that but ma and pa won't.

4. Do you mean Sony's sub before they started charging for MP (or the streaming thing)? Even so, it's the online multiplayer that brings in billions of cash for Sony (slight move of the goalposts there).

Minecraft on the Vita appears to be the only 1M+ online multiplayer game that Sony has in Japan. Splatoon, Mario Kart and Brawl are all way more popular and Minecraft will be on Switch too.

If Japanese gamers decide they only want to pay for one subscription, what does Sony have that can compete with Nintendo's home and portable service, lower price and massive exclusives?

And what about the growing interest in western games like CoD and even in FIFA?

Japanese people prefer portables. FIFA is confirmed for Switch, I think CoDs a certainty, region free.

I saw this thread and I was trying to remember that meme. Then it occurred to me.
"Globally in America".

We seem to be getting a constant amount of "In Japan" threads. How will this sell in Japan, what will they do in Japan, who will sell better in Japan. Now this crazy one about subscription services.

Are we looking at the start of a new meme? "Globally in Japan"?

We don't even know what the price of the subscription will be or what it will offer yet you want to compare it Sony for what?

I wonder what Japans subscription list is like. This is what Asia's has been.

January
ALIENATION
This War Of Mine: The Little Ones
God Of War III Remastered
Tales Of Zesteria
The Swindle
Goat Simulator

February
LittleBigPlanet 3
Until Dawn
Not a Hero
Spelunky
Color Guardians
Torquel

March
Resident Evil: Umbrella Corps (lol)
Tearaway Unfolded
Disgaea 5
Titan Souls
Starwhal
Invisible Inc
Stories: The Path of Destinies

April
Life Is Strange
Drawn To Death
10 Seconds Ninja X
Lumo

Plus they have "subscribe for a year" and get a bonuses.
Buy one in January You get Infamous second son or the order 1886.
Buy one in February you could have gotten Bloodborne, another 3 months of PS, $20 off FF15, or $15 off Titan fall 2.

So if Japan subscription is anything like that - wow.

Nobody is claiming Japan = world, so not sure why you're getting so upset.

Perfectly normal to make a thread about Japan as it's the only region where we get frequent and accurate sales data from.

And that list is lame, won't do much for Japan.

Well, for the price difference, Nintendo's online service is rather lacking at the moment, though not many details were released for it either :/

Switch will murder the PS4 in Japan not because of it's online service but because it's a Nintendo console that is also a... HANDHELD. Sony's console can't do anything but sit under a TV and Japanese gamers on the whole don't want that anymore.
