Let's talk about these genres. Game syou like. If you are interested but do not know where to start.
Shmups also known as Shooters before 7th gen took over as what people think of as Shooter. You have you classics like Gradius,MUSHA,Darius,R-Type and more. These can ve vertical or horizontal. There is the Cute em ups like Fantasy Zone,Twinke Star Sprite and Cloud Master. These are just a more cartoony look but usually still challenging. Bullet Hell is another sub genre. It's what it sounds like. Hundred of projectiles on screen at once and hard as hell. It's not a genre for the faint of heart but there is hope for you esp in some more modern releases. I know I left out a lot like Starfox or Panzer Dragoon,1943 and many more.
It's impossible to list everything and I am no expert on the genre but can point a few releases on more modern systems.
PS4 there is quite a few old arcade releases on PSN of Gradious,Life Force and a few others. For more recent but excellent games there is Resogun which is similar to a old game called Defender. Shoot and rescue people. Astebreed is a Japanese indie game that has stellar reviews on Steam and PS4. It's a little hack n slash but mostly a shooter. Last one I will mention is a game from a company called MOSS. Caladrious Blaze and this is also on PS3. This game is good for beginiers as it has a difficulty settings from Practice where enemies don't shoot to really hard and it's hell. Even if you die on harder difficulty you spawn right where you left off. Xbox One I only know of one and not sure if it had a western release but also from MOSS. Raiden V. Xbox 360 has quite a few exclusive ones from Raiden IV and a few others. Wii U I think has some on VC and Wii VC for sure does like MUSHA. I even consider Star Fox part of it. It's a much easier series for sure and a bit dumbed down but still works. Heck some parts of Nier Automata are old shcool shooters complete with spaceship/mech.
Run N Gun. Another great genre often very challenging. Metal Slug,Contra,GunStar Heroes and others. I know there is a few on Wii U Eshop. Probably some indie Run N Game son Steam and modern systems. I have not been able to look too much into these for Steam or modern systems but I do know of a few good ones. Heavenly Gaurdians on Wii. It's a successor to Pocky and Rocky on SNES. Wild Guns Reloaded on PS4 (can get a physical copy as well on Amazon for 15-20 bucks) and last is a Sega Genesis remake on PS4 also Physical. Assault Suit Leynos. You play as a mech and run and gun your way through. Can be quite challenging but damn fun!.
Again I am no expert on either genre. There is so many I want to list like Space Hairrer or Bulk Slash and a billion more. Sorry if not the best descriptions but this topic is FOR ANYONE WHO IS A FAN of either genre to talk about it or reccomend som other great ones!
