The second point is a sales chart -- one of the few I'll show. What this shows is the monthly cumulative sell-through for hardware in the US for this year. If you can't see it clearly there in the back, the red line all the way at the top is Nintendo DS. The second line is Wii. The third line, interestingly, is PS2, not PS3. PS3 is down there at the bottom, just holding off Game Boy Advance. [Laughter from the crowd]

This undoes reverie's argument. They DO track sell-through. I thought they did. That's the only number that ultimately counts.

He said the words "sell-through". I feel more confident in that company now.

I'm reading the article. He's detailing the WiiDS Phenomenon right there for you.

They're killin' 'em. They're killin' 'em.

John Lucas

Words from the Official VGChartz Idiot

WE ARE THE NATION...OF DOMINATION!

The article was very nice, I wish I was there to play the demos he referred to. This must mean that IGN will have some nice reviews later this week.

More interesting facts from the speech.

In Japan, more than half of all games sold were for Nintendo DS.

Typically, about half of home consoles in Japan are placed in the living room -- with Wii that figure is 75%.

In France, 15 of the top 15 games recently were Nintendo.

In the US, Fils-Aime says they are seeing "early signs of significant market change."

The number of female purchasers of hardware are up 42%.

The number of people over age of 30 purchasing Nintendo DS is up 127%.

Tighten that age range to people over 35, and the number is up 212#.

40% of Wii owners have connected to the internet.

3.3 million plus Virtual Console downloads.

Nintendogs has been in the Top 25 games in the US for the 21 months since its launch. Brain Age is showing similar "legs." = top 25 for 21+ months

"Games that appeal to a wider audience can stay on best seller lists indefinitely," says Fils-Aime.

They are seeing a "change in the perennial post-holiday time period. Everyone knows that more than half of our revenues are generated in November and December, and software sales go in the doldrums in the next quarter after the holidays."

"We believe that as the market widens we shouldn't be so dependent on the holidays," Fils-Aime says.

For the last two Christmas seasons, sales of Nintendo DS in the three months after the holidays have been 35% of holiday sales. But this year, it's at 49% -- "and that's with DS being essentially out of stock in January," said Fils-Aime.

Reggie is so articulate. I read his entire speech just because it was so damned interesting. I wouldn't be surprised if other people did too. If Reggie is right, he could sell more systems, and software than any other company before. Lets just hope they can shove some more out there in time. Viva La Reggie-lution

By the way, how is his last name pronounced?

Edit: Never mind, found it on wikipedia.

"Now, in talking through all of this, there's a danger. You might assume, wrongly, that our differentiation strategy, the pull part of what we're trying to do is all we care about. So let me be clear: nothing could be further from the truth. We understand that if we don't satisfy that core gamer, it won't matter how successful we are on the outer edges. And as I've said more than once, our vision is to be an 'and' company, not an 'or' company. We're not for one group or the other; we're for the expanded audience and the core."

That's, IMO, the most important part of his speach!

Currently Playing: Skies of Arcadia Legends (GC), Dragon Quest IV (DS)

Last Game beaten: The Rub Rabbits(DS)

"That's, IMO, the most important part of his speach!" Agree'd they have to satisfy the core gamers or its all over for nintendo imo.

johnlucas - I believe he's referencing NDP/MC numbers in his speech, specifically for that chart, since he wouldn't have any way to track sell-through of competitors' products directly. That and apparently lots of surveys for the other stats. Nintendo's always been real secretive about where they pull their numbers from.
