Forums - Gaming - i need advice....

I want to play games on my PC that are either out now or coming out (such as Crysis, Sins of a Solar Empire, Starcraft 2, Dawn of War 2, etc) but i can't upgrade my graphics card on my curent computer as it only supports PCI cards. So i might have to buy an entirely new computer (costing around $1800 that i will build myself). But I have a PS3 and i know you can install Linux on it and then install Windows XP/Vista emulators onto the linux and therefore get PC games to run. Do you recommend i just save up the money which will take about 5-6 months, or simply use install Linux on my PS3 and use that? Consider that the graphics will be much better on the PC than on the PS3 version and i may encounter problems while using the Windows emulator.

I haven't tried installing games, or Linux for that matter, on my PS3 myself, but one of your options is free, so there is no harm in trying it. You have keyboard and mouse support, so it might work passably well, especially for the older games. Worst case scenario you have Linux on your PS3.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Windows emulated on a PS3 is slow, like "click a menu, and wait 20 seconds" slow.

it has to be emulated, and that's never a good thing.

In no way, can a PS3 be a substitute for a Windows PC if you want to play Windows games.

Uhh.......What? If a PC can barely emulate a PS2, how do you expect a PS3 to emulate a PC? And how do you plan on increasing the PS3's RAM?

I don´t think you can just play Windows games on your PS3... oh and why can´t you upgrade your PCI card ??? Games like Starcraft2 and Dawn of War 2 shouldn´t require a big system update... if any at all... Crysis on the other hand.... I would wait another half a year... PC prices go down pretty fast...

Emulators are naturally buggy and slow. If want to do PC gaming just save up for the PC.

Won't work for games. First the PS3 only has 256MB RAM so almost no games will play. Second you do not have access to the hardware accelleration of the GPU under Linux. So this won't work.

What's the point of upgrading his PCI card since no PCI card is strong enough to play modern PC games.

Using the PS3 for emulation will not work at all...if you want to play PC games you're best off getting a new PC.

I don't think $1800 is necessary though...I'm pretty sure you could get a Crysis-capable machine for closer to $1000, depending on what you want...

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )
