Forums - Sony - Sony to cut PS3 costs further

SlorgNet said:
Hmm, well, the reality is that all of the major consoles are manufactured in China, and the yuan has been reasonably stable against the dollar (which means a slight depreciation vis-a-vis the euro). So no firm really has an advantage here - they're all benefiting from the cheap yuan, and would all take a hit from a sudden jump in the yuan (say, 15%).

That said, Sony is moving extremely aggressively to cost-reduce the PS3 further. They'll have a $299/299EUR model out by this November, guaranteed.

The only reason I think MS might have an advantage is because all their designers and a good portion of the Xbox crew are based out of Redmond, WA.

Dunno if it's significant enough to make a difference, though.

Thats a shame, I guess we can't expect any PS3 price cut any time soon.

I still think we will see a US price cut this year, but maybe it won't be possible to hit the magical 299 dollars entry price until a slimline product gets released (probably next year).

As for anticipated spotlight games MGS4 needs to be great enough for US gamers to realize how good value for money the PS3 really is specs wise (Cell power, default harddrive for caching and Blu-Ray space and streaming capabilities) and I think the game probably will.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

They were going to cut costs anyways, well shame about the price cut, won't happan for some time now I guess I blame Wii Fit american economey

Why do some of keep thinking they will drop the price by another $100 this year? It ain't gonna happen. $50 max. It should be more evident based on this article.

Cutting costs means they'll try to lose less money on hardware, it doesn't mean they'll cut the prices (especially in America since the dollar is weak). I'm not sure if they'll cut their prices further this year, and if they do it will probably be in November or December.

As I know that I'd be attacked by people who "heard" they're making money on hardware, for the record, my source is Sony's own fiscal report where they said they're losing less money on each PS3 hardware unit.

Can you save me some time and provide a link to the "losing less money on each PS3 sold" part?

Ever heard of Google? Anyway, here you go:

http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/fr/07q3_sony.pdf

The relevant quote is:

"This improvement was primarily due to a significant decrease in the operating losses of the PS3 business as a result of successful PS3 hardware cost reductions."

well I still think a 50$ price drop is possible

Time to Work !

@NJ5

I could have sworn that they finally broke even with the 40GB, and that it costs about $400 to produce each system, and then on top of that, the 80GB is being bought more often

Yeah, its called raising the price of the PS3 in PaL

You might not be that far off.  Not raising the price, but not lowering it as fast may be the case.  It may be with all consoles.

Is anyone reading the post? They've come out and said they can't lower the price..

Yes they can!! Sony just isn't trying they can put out a 10 gb ps3 with 1 usb port.  And maybe a wired controller.  And no psp or wireless connectivity.  Easy as pie.
