Hello guys, I want to hook up my retro consoles to my HDTV, I've been reading a lot and I think the best way to go is with SCART. Primarily the consoles that I want to hook up are SNES, N64, Genesis, maybe PS1 and Dreamcast(I have a VGA box for this one). So, I was looking for a SCART to HDMI converter and I found the Framemister, that thing is ridiculously expensive so Im not getting that one and like many of us I took a look at eBay. They have a Chinese SCART to HDMI converter, costs about $40 depending on the seller ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/Scart-HDMI-to-HDMI-720P-1080P-HD-Video-Converter-Monitor-Box-For-HDTV-DVD-STB-/112105349375?hash=item1a19ffe0ff:g:Ga0AAOSwstxVOGEa )but the thing that worries me the most is the input lag. Do any of you guys have a similar setup and have tried that cheap eBay converter? If so, how does it performs? Thanks in advance!

Make sure that when you get SCART cables, that they're they're the right ones. If you live in North America, get the NTSC SCART cables. The Chinese one isn't as good as the Framemeister, but the question is whether or not the loss of quality is worth the cheaper price. Personally, I can't afford any of that so I just use RF and composite directly connected to my TV.

Yeah, I know the Chinese in is not going to be as good as the Framemister but I cannot justify the ~$500. I'll build this setup slowly, I just bought the SNES cable (I made sure it was for NTSC), the next thing I'm buying is the converter and see how that works, I just wanted to have some feedback from someone who has tried this already. I could just use RF but man, It looks bad!!

There's two YouTube channels that I'd recommend for you: My Life in Gaming and Adam Koralik. Both channels (especially the former) have made numerous videos about the various products that can be used.

I managed to get a hold of a Trinitron for all my retro games, so I'm not much help. Always assumed playing old games on HD tvs was a fools errand, but it's interesting to hear there are ways to get around the major issues.

Yeah, those gray Trinitron with the composite jacks were good, I had one but it died   :(

If the console supports them, S-Video cables make it even better!

The Framemeister is apparently retro gamings heaven. Other than that, the best picture you can usually get out of your consoles is RBG. it's miles better than composite, but some american versions of consoles don't have it. It's a PAL standart though, so most european versions of consoles do have it.

This Youtube channel has a whole series explaining the diffrences and producs you need to get the best picture out of your retro consoles, might be worth a look: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLTNBVisVMbSR1ZDDQRgjg6S9D2YQ4rwnZ

When he said SCART, he was referring to RGB. That being said, something like the Framemeister or at least something else is necessary since NTSC TVs don't have a SCART input.

What hdtv do you have?

If the TV has VGA input it already has a RGB input and they are the same level as scart so you could look for a RGB scart to VGA adapter. That just processes the sync and doubles the scan lines and deinterlaces I think so you won't lose any quality but it would mean you'd also need a VGA switchbox and a scart switchbox I guess inline.

Are you in Europe or the USA?
