Essentially the sequel to my earlier thread seen here.

Not only are there games from before that we think couldve been done better, but also a few game consoles/handhelds as well.

Allow me to start here with Sega's golden boy of the 90s, the Genesis:

-Wait till 1990/91 to release it, thus launching it right with Sonic 1.

-Redesign the controller so that it has 6 buttons by default.

-Give it a better soundchip so that at least it doesn't have crackily sounding audio.

-No add-ons. All the Sega CD and 32X did was cost Sega consumer trust.

-Relating to the above line, make Knuckles Chaotix a Genesis game instead.

Well that's my first crack at it, so how about you? What's a game system you'd handle differently and how'd you do it?

Some of these just weren't good ideas.

Nintendo was like 80% of the home console industry when the Genesis launched. If they launched head to head with the Super NES, they would have been dead on arrival. By launching first (and constantly keeping their price lower than the SNES), they were able to hold off Nintendo for a few years and build their brand. Basically, the did what Xbox 360 did.

As a result, they didn't know what improvements Nintendo was going to bring. Nobody prioritized sound in those days until the SNES. And, based on when they launched, they didn't expect Mode 7 or controller improvements.

I was a Nintendo fanboy but, up until the add one, Sega was doing everything right in my opinion. They just abandoned their aging hardware a little too early trying to get the Saturn on the market. And I agree. Those shitty add-ons didn't help. Nobody bought them, even if they worked.

Well would the six-button controller at launch idea be a good one at least?

That actually would have been awesome!

Your ideas went bad. It's just a case of hindsight being 20/20. At the time, Sega didn't know they were screwing up. They were setting the precedent of screwing up.

It's like PS1 not having analog sticks at launch or Xbox 360 not having WI Fi or HDMI. They weren't "future proof" because they didn't know they needed to be.
