Forums - Sales Discussion - Japan Sales- Switch Year 1 vs 3DS and Wii U

Current week will be interesting because this will be most likely week where Switch will constantly start selling better than Wii U on weekly basis, in its 6. week Wii U has week sales failed from cliff, 20k, folowd buy 16k, 13k, 12k, 10k..
And soon Switch will start selling better than 3DS in same time on weekly basis.

Here are the first full quarter sales for 3DS, Vita, Wii U & PS4.

3DS, April to June 2011-350k (27k/week)

Vita, Jan to March 2012-200k (15k/week)

Wii U, Jan to March 2013-225k (17k/week)

PS4, April to June 2014-125k (10k/week)

Vita, Wii U & PS4 are all dogshit terrible so it would really be pathetic if Switch dropped to a similar baseline. 3DS baseline was better but still rather poor.

Under 30k baseline would be pretty disappointing for Switch, 30-50k would be good and 50k+ would be great.

You talking about average weekly sales in first quarter after launch?

Even if Switch can do average weekly sales around 30k until Splatoon 2 arrives that would be pretty good, around 40k weekly until Splatoon 2 arrives would actually be great.

Yes, 3DS launched in Feb 2011, Vita in Dec 2011, Wii U in Dec 2012, PS4 in Feb 2014 so these are the first full post-launch quarters.

Idk, around 30k baseline would be sorta meh.......thats barely over 3DS baseline which was considered poor and led to a ¥10,000 price drop.

For reference, here are the averages for the previous generation.

DS, Jan to March 2005-560k (43k/week)

PSP, Jan to March 2005-680k (52k/week)

PS3, Jan to March 2007-365k (28k/week)

Wii, Jan to March 2007-1.02m (80k/week)

Being barely over the 3DS & PS3 baseline, which were both considered poor, really wouldnt be that good. Being in the 40-50k range like DS & PSP however would be pretty solid.

Interesting.

Yes, but that baseline would be only until Splatoon 2 in Q2.

You need to take in account that DS and PSP were last handhelds before smartphones.

40k-50k is the general 3DS baseline, it just had that lull for a couple of months because of Nintendo's shitty lineup which was rectified when they cut the price by August.

im gonna stick with a 30k baseline from April-June would be "meh". Not horrible, but at the same time not very impressive.

3DS post-price cut and in 2012/2013 was able to exceed a 40-50k baseline so DS/PSP being pre-mobile is not the reason.

I would say though even 2012/13 is a long time ago now.

In 12/13 there weren't nearly as many cheapo tablets for kids, tablets were still mainly a luxury device for adults only, in 14/15/16 you start to see the rise of $99-$150 tablets.

Ofcourse its not horrible in any case and actually quite solid if we look at number of games for Switch in next few months.

And post-Splatoon2 will most likly similar numbers for Switch, but I hope you are not serious in point that mobile devices didn't affected sales on handhelds like 3DS/Vita!?
