Personally I think that a 3DS successor would be a horrible idea - the Switch is a hybrid system that can work as both for the price of a home console. Nintendo's software divisions are already merged and having two devices on the market that both act as portables would be a horrible idea for Nintendo, not to mention the fact that they need all the system seller software they can get for the Switch, Monster Hunter and Pokemon for eg.
The only reason the 3DS is running along with the Switch right now is because they still had games in development for it and they're only finishing up, and while they're at it they might as well milk it dry before it dies as a budget handheld with a 1000 game library, as Reggie himself stated. I don't see them releasing games for the 3DS beyond 2017 at all. It's coexistance isn't because they're worried the Switch will fail and it's a backup - everything seems to indicate Nintendo and Kimishima are very certain the Switch will be a success.
I find it baffling that this is a concern or idea many people have.
