Forums - Gaming - PSN brings in more money than all of Nintendo

I could swear this was old news. At least I had a dejavu of seeing the same thing last year.

And that's great and all, but it all comes down to profit. Revenue doesn't mean much.

It's happened before. Lots of times.

And the reason this is important is because gaming has become some sort of service, rather than just a product. There's DLC, Season Passes, subscriptions, etc. Nintendo hasn't capitalised on that enough. Us consumers might see that as a good thing, but other companies can keep their consumer base happy even with all those paywalls.

Also, we should keep in mind PSN is not just digital games and PS+. There are also services Playstation and MS offer that Nintendo does not (PS Now, da Cloud, EA Access), and this is why people make fun of Nintendo's online infrastructure. They don't have any of that.

Ya'll should follow ZhugeEX on Twitter or wherever. He gives great insight on the gaming industry. Horrible jokes, though.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

Too bad their profits are lower than Nintendo's.

both companies already release their lastest quarterly results, so can you show us data that back up your statement?

I think these might be it?

http://www.usnews.com/news/business/articles/2017-02-02/sony-records-84-pct-quarterly-profit-drop-on-movie-loss

Nintendo's $569 million in profit versus Sony's $174 million in profit. Movie business hurting Sony.

By the way:

Why the difference between Microsoft and Sony? Gaming Revenue vs. Game & Network Services respectively?

Someone here with a Twitter account able to ask him?

I assume when ZhugeEX said PlayStation Network he meant the whole gaming division. i.e. hardware, software and online?

No, network only.

By the way guys, here's the primary source for this info:

More specifically, it's on page 3.

It's always funny to see guys argue about another man's money.

Turkish must really be happyy for Microsoft making the idea..... which allows Sony to get more money..... lol

Reminds me of people celebrating how much money Ninty was making with Pokemon Go. They were really happy with the idea. Does it ring a bell?

Wow, i really thought Nintendo had suffered with the decline of the wii u but even with that, they had three times sony's profit?! That's pretty incredible. Given ps4 success,  that's surely due to ps4 pro and psvr flopping so badly?

Sony sold a lot more PS4s than Microsoft sold XB1s.

I'm referring to the x-axis of the graph. Why is there a difference between Sony and Microsoft labels?

Goes to show you can't just look at adoption numbers and declare one company more successful than another. The 360 and PS3 sold about the same number of consoles but one was ultimately more profitable than the other.

The salt is strong with this one

Is it wrong to bring up profit when discussing revenue?

Nintendo made more profit this quarter due to foregin exchange gains.

EDIT: I'm assuming we're talking about gaming division only? If we include all of Sony then you have to account for the 1 billion dollar writedown in their movie business.

Sony spends more money than they have it seems tho. Why they seem to want to sell off the entire TV and Film division. Sony more and more seemingly becoming a console company and less a Media/Electronics giant they once were.

If you think Sony was made up of only those 3 business units, then sure, Sony is seemingly becoming a console only company.

But if you actually knew what you were talking about, you'd know they have a bunch of other divisions.

Was it that hard? Like, you at least knew Sony Music or their home entertainment products right?
