Why do we need holograms when we have VR?

VR > holograms.

VR is a million times more immersive than holograms.

You wont be able to do holograms at a level where they take up your intire room, makeing it appear like your inside a game (thats star trek level bullsh*t).

VR can do that with a simple headset.

But what about side scrollers? Do you know how awkward that would be in VR?

That genre just wont be on VR.

No one would want to play that as a hologram either btw.

side scrollers work well on a 2D flat screen, and thats about it.

You have something for those... its called a TV and its not going anywhere.

What I can see working with AR & holograms :

Old board style games (monopoly, chess, checkers, ect).
Card games (poker ect)

VR works with any 1st/3rd person game, currently on market, more or less.
Holograms will have limited use for gameing.

Okay, but there's constant talk of consoles not being here in the near future. And yes I'm aware of hooking up your laptop to your TV but that's not the same.

What does any of that have to do with Hologram displays?

I'm not sure about the timeline, but I've been fairly certain for some time now we'll see major shift in industry once volumetric displays become commercially viable.

On one hand there will be classic gaming industry pushing probably for VR tech (3rd or 4th gen, if we're considering this as 1st gen), on the other, part of that very same industry, along with boardgaming industry, pushing for volumetric displays.

Anyway, fun times ahead.
