Forums - Gaming - What the Pro means for the Scorpio

With about 2 months of sales under its belt, the PS4 pro has been tracking around 20% of total PS4 sales since its launch. More or less.

Question is, is this an indication of how sales for the Scorpio will be or is it even worse than that"

Here are som things to consider

These upgraded consoles are still the exacty same platform. They aren;t getting an exclusive library of games but instead just offering an enhanced experince on the existing games. And an experience that is in part mostly dpendent on the purchase of a 4k TV.

What we have seen with the PS4pro sales  is a SKU that cost at least  $150 more than its less powerful sibling. It also came without any of the bundles the PS4s had and none of the deals.

Now the Scorpio will come at a time when the PS4s and the XB1s could cost as little as $199 (MS may not want this but I expect sony to drop the price of the PS4s to $199 and the PS4pro to $299 around the time the scorpio comes). If the scorpio launches at $399, that will mean it will be at least $200 more expensive the the other consoles it shares its library with.

Or is the promise of 4k gaming important enough to make all of the above moot?

The problem with PS4 pro (and I have one), is that there just isn't a good enough reason to upgrade if you already own a standard PS4, and I suspect the same will be true for current Xbox one owners once Scorpio releases, sure it offers better graphics, but not offering a better experience will be a big problem for Microsoft, especially if they push too hard on spec and release at too high of a price point.

Lots of people have asked me, if I would recommend a PS4 pro over a slim, my answer is usually "if you have a 4K TV, then sure, if not, no" I think the same will ring true for Scorpio.

The other point being that since Microsoft's new approach is to offer cross buy on Xbox one and PC, and all future exclusives will also be on PC, you have to ask, do I upgrade to a more expensive Xbox or just go the whole hog and make a gaming PC and get even better performance.

I can recommend any new adapter to get the PS4 Pro if its avaible, it has a 1TB HD in it you forget. Many games are starting to benefit from the more performance for 1080p TVs as well

My online systems: Mac M4 Apple sillicon+16 GB, PC Vega 56+Amd Ryzen+32GB DDR4, Xbox Series X, PS4 Pro, Switch Lite, Playstation Vita TV, PS3, PSP

My retro systems: Wii U, DSi, Xbox, PS2, Dreamcast, N64, PS1, Sega Saturn, Neo Geo AES, SNES, Evercade

I own a PS4 Pro. I love the Xbox brand. I have a 4K TV.

Yes, I'll more than likely buy a Scorpio but M$ has a tough sell for the majority of gamers. I have a PS4 and Xbox One on a 1080p TV and since I buy most games digitally, I play the same games on my PS4 Pro and Xbox One S on the 4K TV.

Maybe it's just me but I've been gaming since the early 80's. I'm not new to this. The improvements are noticeable but still negligible.

I think the Scorpio has a long road ahead of it unless there's some amazing showcases at E3.

The real problem for MS is that with the decline of the Xbox brand, and restrengthening of the PS brand, the Scorpio is only going to appeal to people in a handful of countries. The Scorpio isn't going to change anything on the WW stage, as it's still an Xbox. NA, UK, and I believe AU are the areas that the Scorpio may do ok.

Of course, with it being $399+ (I'm expecting at least $449), while the PS4 Slim is going to be $199 later this year, and a possible $299 Pro, it's going to be an even more difficult sell. That's $200-$250 more for someone who is fine with OG PS4 graphics, and possibly $100-$150 more for someone who is looking into 4K gaming.

And maybe one of the biggest things working against the Scorpio is it no longer has XBO exclusives to prop it up. MS is starting to focus less on the Xbox and more on Windows, its true bread and butter. That includes putting all XBO exclusives onto the PC to help push Windows gaming. For the Pro, it's going to be the only place you can play Persona 5, Horizon, MLB, TLOU 2, GOW, Spider-Man, Death Stranding, Days Gone, Crash Bandicoot, Detroit: BH, and AC 7 in 4K. That's just some of the upcoming ones. You still have older ones like Infamous: SS, Knack, R&C, TLOU, UC4. Again, for the Scorpio, for the exclusives they have left after they cancellations, they're on PC.  Which I think you could upgrade one for less than $400-$450 to be able to run those games in 4K.
