No. The Handheld is in charge of the resolution and output.
The Dock is just a "Pass through".
Louie said: I thought so too but the more I think of it the Joycons look like the better deal, to be honest. A pair of Joycons can basically act like two controllers (that's $40 for each controller) and they also come with that little attachment to be more ergonomic (and a wrist strap, yeah!). The docking station though... I don't know it just seems to be a piece of plastic? Does it have a fan inside or really fancy tech to enable a smooth transition from TV to portable mode? Maybe they have a really small assembly line for the dock and won't be able to produce many so they put a huge price on it or something haha.
The Joy Cons also have a ton of sensors, basically a Wii Mote.

So it likely connects to the single USB port?
Dulfite said: The screen quality is considerably better than any touchscreen Nintendo has made before, it can do, apparently, 1080p on the screen itself according to Nintendo a couple nights ago (contrary to what Digital Foundry said).
Nintendo doesn't make screens.
Secondly, you can render a game at 1080P and still display it on a 720P screen and see improvements.
SmileyAja said: Let's say that the supplemental dock cranks the power up, and now we have a 2 TFLOP GPU, sure you could port any games for that without issues but now try optimizing the same game to run on 350 - 400 GFLOPS undocked (or as many people here believe 150 GFLOPS). Not an easy feat, you'd have to make a lot of sacrifices.
There will *not* be a supplemental dock that augments the handhelds processing capabilities.
GPU's need this thing called "Bandwidth" and the Dock is only using USB, it doesn't have the bandwidth. You need something PCI-E based for the GPU in the Switch and the Dock to talk to each other.

Please inform yourself about downsampling/supersampling. |
But that would be an inconvenience. :P
Knitemare said: I get more the idea that THERE IS some kind of GPU, or GPU optimizer in the Dock. For its own sake, I hope Nintendo aint charging $90 just because.
Nope. The dock is a "Dumb" device. It just passes everything through.
The Handheld does all the heavy lifting.
The issue I have with the dock though is the screen could rub against the plastic of the Dock (Especially if the screen or dock has grit on it) and scratch the screen.
