Sometimes, when I'm working, I replay the storyline to games like Chrono Trigger and Metal Gear in my head. Gameplay is king, but a good story will stay with you, long after the game is gathering dust.

Shooting games are not that important to have a good story line. A complex storyline is not needed in good shooters. All you need is good graphics and sound, exciting gameplay and lots of weapons and good level design.
RPG's depend upon a good story line to draw people into the game. RPG's tell a story and are best with alternative story endings and pathways through the game
Yes the story is very important. Pacman had to eat those ghosts because he was hungry. Very hungry. Honestly though it depends on the game. In Mario it's the same story every time and that doesn't matter to anyone that plays it. An RPG on the other hand should have a great story in order to keep you playing for 600000 hours.
