Mass Effect Review

Originality: Combining the playstyle and aesthetics of Knights of the Old Republic with more swift combat (not turned based) and a completely new and original storyline was something I hated at first and loved by the end of it. This game “feels” a LOT like the KOTOR games, but the story is completely original. Still, it wasn’t overall terribly unique.

15/20

Graphics: This game looked good on my gtx 980ti now (particularly the character models and ships) let alone what it looked like to people when it launched.

10/10

Art Style: They sacrificed an interesting art style by going with the oh so common realistic style, sadly. However, I did enjoy how the game had so many places that looked so different in theme and color. It was a beautiful game at times, artistically.

10/15

Story: This is what Old Bioware had its mojo in. My goodness could they tell a good story! I absolutely hated combat in this game at first due to the terribly hard controls of using a sniper and driving the stupid vehicle but the story made me absorbed in this game. Forgetting how short games used to be (took me 13 hours to beat), I accidentally beat the game (lol?) only to discover that I couldn’t go back to do the other side quests, instead it just took me to the main menu. I was devastated! And that tells you how much the story of this game impacted me! Bravo! And I LOVE how we didn’t end up beating the big bad guy, only to discover an even worse enemy in the sequel. Instead, we beat a bad guy knowing full well this guy is a joke compared to what it still waiting for us, which is a unique way to do a story in a video game!

30/30

Game Interface: Annoying or not? Having to hold space bar to switch things around and just the way you navigate through items and upgrades in this game don’t feel very convenient, at times, but maybe that was just the limitations of the time period that I can’t quite remember now.

3/5

Controls easy and fluid or difficult and rigid? Let’s see, maybe I’m biased because I went the infiltrator route and beat the game sniping everyone, but man was that a difficult gun to control. Tons of shake factor, was that the point? I can’t tell, but I got used to it eventually and incidentally it made me better at playing widow maker in Overwatch (LOL). Also, that stupid MAKO or however it is spelled. Never again! EVER!

3/5

Is it fun? I HATED this game the first time I played it years ago. Then, I HATED it when I tried it again like a year ago. Both those times I barely made it into the game. This time, I beat the whole thing, and I realized how much I missed what KOTOR felt like and how happy I was to discover this game is basically KOTOR 3 for me emotionally. I had a blast!

Yep, going to play that one next! Though my brother in law (who is pretty hardcore pc overlord) says that he hated 2 and 3, but he thinks I would like them more, and that he won't be able to talk with me if I do lol.

I played ME1 almost two years ago and it was my first EA/bioware game - and my second Western RPG - I really liked it.

Here's my review I made.....

Game: Mass Effect 1
Genre: RPG/FPS
Developer: Bioware/EA
System: Steam (PC)
Total Score: 93/100
Value Score: 9.3/10

• Story: 10/10
• Characters: 9/10
• GamePlay: 9/10
• Graphics: 8/10
• Sound: 10/10
• Music: 8/10
• Length: 9/10
• Replay Value: 10/10
• Player Value: 10/10

Pros
+Great Dynamic story that keeps changing depending on what role, what decisions and actions you make in the game.
+Multiple Scenarios, Paths and Endings which leads to multiple playthroughs and thus replay value
+Class based gameplay system which allows you to have a different experience each time you play as a different class.
+Character customization lets you create your own character in their own appearance, etc
+A great mixture of RPG and FPS elements packaged into one game
+Fantastic voice acting and a lot of voice over scenes
+A great morality system that also plays in what bonuses you would get (i.e. discounts, certain decision options)
+Leveling system has quite a depth that ranges from learning unique class abilities to weapon mastery
+Save files are interchangeable between Steam and Origin.

Cons
-Some minor glitches could occur such as falling into the floor or certain scenes not being playable from time to time but nothing game breaking and does not happen often or repeatedly
-Some of the visual designs look a bit outdated and last gen style (PS2/GCN/Xbox era)
-Some of the side missions lead you to similar to same looking areas and structures
-Some of the planets are so barren and empty with nothing but fetch quests or extra grinding for weapons and money.
-Pinnacle Station DLC is not available for standalone purchases of Mass Effect 1. Only available for Trilogy purchasers.
-Bring Down the Sky DLC has to be downloaded separately and installed unlike the description in the store page where it says its available already.

Yep, the old school Bioware formula was prety awesome. I'm curious how their more modern games hold up (da inquisition or ME andromeda).

I didn't even realize there was DLC. How do I do that? I have the trilogy on origin.

Three is my favourite.

2 is the highest rated and is amazing, it just didn't quite grab me the way 3 did.

Both 2 and 3 (especially 3) have some of the best DLC ever designed for games.
