The Legend of Zelda. Hands down.
The NES had a surprising amount of titles that still hold up today though, between the Mario Trilogy, Kirbys Adventure, Kid icarus and Zelda there's a lot of games with depth there.

Obviously, since you weren't alive then. FYI, Mega Man 2 was extremely popular, and Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior received Zelda/Mario level pushes from Nintendo marketing on launch. They were very mainstream, though not as good or popular as the later titles.

I know I won't win popular vote, but my absolute best is Super Mario Bros. 2. I grew up with this game and still like it very much, it was incredible switching between characters and throwing turnips.

I'm 32. I'm pretending to be 26 so I can fit in and not feel bad about the time I laughed at a 30 year old who plays video games.
