3D Mario is a bigger game than a third Pokemon version.

Based on what? If we look at the most relevant comparison on 3DS, OR/AS remakes outsold 3D Land even after launching 3 years later (I think w/o bundles also) and with a prior installment already on the system (X/Y) with another announced a little over a year after OR/AS launched. Also worth noting is that this would be the first HD mainline Pokemon game playable on TV, that may or may not be a big deal. :L

There is precedent for launching with Zelda and not Mario.

The Switch launch is already breaking precedent so that doesn't really mean anything, plus Wii U launched with Mario, though not a 3D one.

Based on the fact that no game you mentioned is a third version and a third version is not going to move the same as a 3D Mario game on holidays.

The bolded is what I wanted to know your reasonings for claiming. We don't know exactly what it is so for now I think using non-new gen games for comparison is fair. Even if it is a third version, I still doubt that as it should be a huge jump up from Sun/Moon, and it'll still be the first and (for a while) only Pokemon game on the system. Definitely not gonna have the same circumstances as Emerald or Platinum.

For those curious Emerald sold about 6.32 million units and Platinum 7.39 million units.

That's still in the ballpark of games like Mario Galaxy 2, Twilight Princess not HD, Smash Melee, Sunshine, Ocarina of Time 64, the original legend of Zelda, Street Fighter 2, and outsells all Wii U games bar Mario Kart 8.

The Democratic Nintendo fan....is that a paradox? I'm fond of one of the more conservative companies in the industry, but I vote Liberally and view myself that way 90% of the time?

Nah it should be this
Zelda: Launch
Mario: Summer
Pokemon: Holidays
At this is point I would say Pokemon is the one IP Nintendo has that can be a system to seller to basically all markets just look at the numbers of the 3DS games especially Sun and Moon.

True but let's not pretend that other game's can't sell. People did buy Wii U's because of Smash and Splatoon, same with Bayonetta and Mario Kart.

Can't say they sold a lot, but in a more regular atmosphere with the hype machine we've seen built up for both Sun and Moon and Breath of the Wild could do it.

Hence my suspicion of Mario being the Holiday title.

The third version won't sell the same as Sun/Moon. Betting all the holiday season with a thirs version is a mistake.

New super mario bros U was a launch title.
I believe that Nintendo will release a big games almost every month between march and the end of year.
I don t see why people are always talking about march OR end of the year. There is april, may, june etc. I remember that smash bros on gamecube was released like a month or two after the launch of the gamecube.
And Nintendo said many times that they dont want a game draught. We need to use the term launch window, not launch day. Mario could very well be a day one title, mario kart remaster could be out in april, zelda in may. Who knows?

It also appeared at E3 first, Super Mario (Switcheroo) has not.

Neither has the Switch. And Nintendo consoles also always hold an E3 appearance before launch until now. The Switch's reveal schedule has been very unusual for Nintendo, so it follows that the same would be true for any launch titles, including a launch Mario game.

A game that sellings over 5 million lifetime is pretty good for a Nintendo excluisive It certainly would do a better job than Metroid or F-Zero

But not a better job than a 3D Mario. Even less when you factor a lot of the audience bought recently a 3DS and they are not going to buy another console soon.

This is about different audiences.

Here is something you keep overlooking, though: this isn't JUST a third version. This is a full, traditional Pokémon game on a CONSOLE, that can be played on an HD television. This is going to be a pretty big selling point that past third versions haven't had. Heck, no full Pokémon game has had this. And while it may not sell as well as Sun and Moon, it can certainly cell as well as Zelda and 3D Mario. Heck, Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum have all sold about as well or better than the best selling Zelda titles.
