It was sold out.  It was in stock. People tweeted about it being in stock. Everyone bought it. It went out of stock.

Yeah, I'd considered that but I'm still convinced Amazon are atrificially holding it longer in the charts to promote it. Let's see how long it take this to drop.

Didn't we already determine with the original Switch preorder thing that the hourly is not a strict hour to hour chart but the monthly, weekly, etc are all normal?

I don't bloody know any more. All I know is I never saw it with the XB1s or the Pro. Both of those console slipped down the charts and I certainly never saw any of them just up 20+ places while they were out of stock.

edit: I've been watching Youtube and didn't realise it was one of the top threads on GAF.

Well the Switch came in stock not long after the last update to the hourlies, sold out before the next update, hence the jump.  I mean, it sold out in apparently minutes.  And this is January, so there's not as much aggressive pushing towards the top.

Nintendo has the habit of releasing their preorders in little jolts, never enough to actully satisfy demand. Microsof/Sony don't do this - they just put all of them up for preorder, untill its gone. In a sense, they ARE actually pinning their console on the charts artificially for advertisement, not by manipulating the algorithm, but by outplaying it.

Bet with PeH:

I win if Arms sells over 700 000 units worldwide by the end of 2017.

Bet with WagnerPaiva:

I win if Emmanuel Macron wins the french presidential election May 7th 2017.

What? No they're not. The console has to sell consistantly for it to stay in the charts so it's a fair representation of its popularity.

Well yes, but there is a small grain of truth to this.  If the Switch is selling well, by increasing preorders available in waves, they get to be in the top 100 in the hourlies longer than if they put it all out and they sold out.  Yeah, the position in the yearly would be the same but the position in the hourly is what most will see.

However, I don't think that's the reasoning.  It's more about avoiding overstock since this is March, not November, so there's no guaranteed high spending here.  Overstock could be a real issue.  So I think Nintendo is more trying to feel out the precise demand.

I don't think he's talking about the Switch there, he's suggesting the mothod of providing shipments constantly is 'sort of' outplaying the algorythm. But it's not though because that's what the algorythm is clearly meant to reflect.
