Another blunder, they are bringing a knife to a gun fight. With hopes a gimmick laser sight on the knife evens things out.
Well, keep a few things in mind:
1. The former Ubisoft employee isn't speaking from experience with the Switch. He is speculating based on the leaked Eurogamer specs, which while surely accurate may not be the full story. He knows far more about this stuff than the rest of us, but that doesn't mean what he is saying is as accurate as genuine insider information from a dev working with the console, which have contradicted what he said to at least a degree.
2. We have had confirmation from the same places that have leaked things like the specs, that we not only have a port of the next Assassins Creed incoming, but developers have also managed an acceptable direct port of Dark Souls 3, which is no slouch in the visuals department. At the very least, this points to ports of triple A current gen games not being entirely unworkable on the Switch.
3. The Switch not being powerful doesn't mean it won't succeed. The Wii, DS, and 3DS were all underpowered against their competitors, and they all did quite well. They sold very well, they got lots of third party support, and two of them stand as two of Nintendo's best selling consoles EVER. The Wii U's problem wasn't power. It was poor marketing, a muddled message, a convoluted gimmick that was difficult to grasp and unfriendly to both casual and hardcore gamers, and price point that was far too high for what if offered, which was basically a last gen system with off-tv play. The Wii U was a contradiction of a system that didn't know what it wanted to be. It tried to target both the casual and hardcore audiences, and in doing so lost both. The Switch does not look to have most of these issues, and is even pretty darn powerful as a portable gaming device.
The Switch was never going the be as powerful as an Xbox One. It's just not possible with today's tech. It is trying to be both a console and a handheld. Sacrifices needed to be made to its console side to accommodate its handheld side. But here is the thing: while it may not be as powerful as an Xbox One or PS4, you can't take your Xbox One or PS4 to work. Or school. Or on a trip. I know people who are out a lot, and don't always have a lot of time to game at home. I game on portable devices a lot because I'm often not around my home consoles. The ultimate appeal of the Switch is that it tries to combine these two worlds. This is a far simpler and easier to sell message than "hey, you ever have someone who wants to watch tv while you play a game? Have we got the console for You!" Personally, I find the idea of playing, say, Persona 5 or MGS5, or low spec versions of current-gen only games anywhere I go to be quite appealing.
And for the record, I am quite happy with my years on the Wii U. It kept me entertained while I was waiting for the great games to hit PS4 and Xbox One. It has some of my favorite games of the generation. While it's a shame that it has to die a little too early, I more than got my money's worth out of it. But I do hope Wii U gets that last Zelda game. I'm personally quite sure it will.
