Yeah, that has been the case for a while, the HD/Wii era really didn't grab or retain its audience in Japan, many either moved on from gaming or switched to mobile phones/computers. Only certain franchises (mainly Final Fantasy, Mario and Dragon Quest), most currently locked to handhelds, Pokemon, Monster Hunter, Yokai Watch, etc still break the million threshold in Japan, hence why so many Japanese companies are either struggling to appeal to the Western market or like Square Enix or Sega, buying Western development groups to create the software to appeal to the Western market.
Time will tell how the Switch will play out, will it be embraced like most Nintendo handhelds have been or will it be a slow build up that eventually starts to get good sells like the last few Sony devices in Japan that started slow but eventually became the larger selling non-handheld consoles of their time period.
Edit: In regards to Splatoon, good to see. Hopefully this spurs Nintendo into giving the talent behind this game or other new ideas legit chances at games instead of just shuffling them into spin offs of other current IP or eShop games with no marketing. Heck hopefully it teaches them marketing any game is better then what they normally do for the non-Zelda or Mario titles with silent launches outside of a few internet videos/trailers. Still not seeing the results yet but I am hopeful.
