My Sons DSXL hinge broke as well. He broke it himself. Did the same thing. Still works great too!

Similar thing happened to me, my sister wanted to use my DS Lite so she tried to snatch it from me, and she practically tore the top half off

Nothing a bit of glue couldn't fix though! The only thing that didn't work was the charging LED light.
