Shenmue 3 is currently in development for the PlayStation 4 and PC. The game was announced by creator Yu Suzuki on stage at Sony’s E3 2015 press conference as a Kickstarter-funded project, which ultimately went on to drum up $6.3 million. The title also became the fastest videogame on the crowdfunding website to notch up one million dollars, which was accomplished in under 24 hours.
While developer Ys Net has yet to confirm a Shenmue 3 release date, Suzuki-san has said that the team is targeting a December 2017 launch window for the hotly anticipated sequel. With production only just ramping up full-scale however, it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see the game pushed into 2018.
The Shenmue franchise debuted back in 1999 for the Dreamcast and received a sequel two years later. At the time, the original title was the most expensive videogame ever made, and while it was met with positive reviews, Shenmue failed to set tills alight despite attracting a strong cult following among gamers.
