Forums - Gaming - Sony mobile games in Japan

In March, Sony announced the formation of ForwardWorks, a new game studio that would focus on creating “full-fledged” mobile games based on PlayStation franchises. Today, it’s revealing the first batch of those games: new titles in the Hot Shots Golf, Wild Arms, Arc the Lad, and What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord? series.

In addition, games based on Parappa the Rapper, Doko Demo Issho, and Boku no Natsuyasumi will come later on. Square Enix is also collaborating with ForwardWorks on an as-yet unrevealed mobile project, as is Nippon Ichi Software with its Disgaea and Yomawari franchises.

The ForwardWorks initiative includes something called Project Field, a Sony-developed trading card platform that works together with a smartphone app. ForwardWorks is developing content for Project Field, and the first release will be based on Level 5’s smash hit Yo-Kai Watch series.

It's really good idea.

If Sony is chasing Nintendo, it's going to be a hard sell. Nintendo has mobile friendly IP (Mario/Pokemon) that Sony just doesn't have. It's much easier to sell AR Pokemon games than this stuff.

Not really that hard^^

Pokemon Go has long been considered the reigning champion of mobile gaming. But that perception isn't necessarily accurate in Japan. A report from Bloomberg reveals the 2015 online RPG hit Fate/Grand Order is topping Japanese mobile gaming revenue charts and making more money than Pokemon Go.

As Bloomberg reveals, Fate/Grand Order has been downloaded by Japanese mobile players over 7 million times. It's also outsold Pokémon Go 104 out of 133 days on Android, along with over 50 on iOS. Bloomberg notes that the game has "helped to lift Sony Music's operating profit by 23 percent to 16.5 billion yen," causing Sony to plan to "expand its mobile games effort with more titles in more markets in the coming months."
