for it to be true though would require that Playstation has its best Friday sale EVER, AND pass 50 million consoles, AND have the pro pre orders - and yet still do 400k+ WORSE than last year.
That the xbox one S that has been doing well for 4 months with all those sales did WORSE than last year.
It also would require that the only two places to have this information be "windows central" and "crap gamer". Leaving the question why would they have the numbers, why does no one else have the numbers - and specially why wouldn't xbox have the numbers?
On top of that how would they have the playstation numbers? Who would trust the two most biased people possible with both Microsoft numbers AND playstation numbers?

I'm not sure why nobody else has leaked the numbers, and I can't speak for this crapgamer guy (honestly, first time I heard the name was during this hubbub), but the EIC of Windows Central came onto Reddit about an hour ago (along with Jez) and defended their sources on the numbers. I can't say whether or not their sources are accurate, but it's a case of "I believe you believe it."
Now, IF the perfect storm you described happened, and Sony had their BBF and hit all those amazing milestones on a down YOY, then I'd attribute it to spin on the part of Sony. I can't think of any other way to square that circle. They possibly included worldwide sales this year instead of referring to just the NPD numbers. I only say this based on the idea that companies spin numbers all the time, and I'm not criticizing them if they did this. It just doesn't seem outside of the realm of possibility.
While WC seems adamant that the sources are 100% accurate (and defy anyone to report otherwise), I agree with you that somehow they had access to numbers they shouldn't have (PSVR numbers specifically). I'm sure Microsoft and Sony have the numbers, but those aren't something they would ever report.
