Anywey, why do peope often use just like "die" "dead" or "kill" words ?
It's scary.
My thoughts, turn based rpg became niche genre. That's all.
Are turn-based RPGs in mainstream gaming Dead? | |||

Dead? Never. Dramatically decreasing in relevance? Absolutely. Pokemon is the last main stream bastion of hope for the battle system. If that goes, turn-based will be relegated to more niche franchises like SMT and Fire Emblem.
I still hold out hope that Pokemon will switch to a real time combat system like that of Ni No Kuni, and I wouldn't be even remotely surprised if that happened sooner or than later. Maybe Gen 9.

And we can read here the whole problem in your thread. You're trying to compare the sales of turn based RPGs to Call of Duty? Really?
Other games or genres became really popular in the last 10-15 years and sell a lot, it doesn't mean that all other genres are dead. Just keep some balance in your comparisons! |
I'm sorry but.. yes...how long do you think people are gonna play FPS....i mean really....the market is FAT and saturated with COD;: BF; counterstrike.
Games like GTA5, Tomb Raider, Uncharted, Racing Games,...they all do well...
But yeah the Turn-based RPG genre...seemss kinda dead...pokemon and a few indie games that just arent AAA...
Pokemon says hi
Bravely Default says hi
Etc says hi
Edited: Forgot the rpgs part
PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

I'd consider Pokemon and Civ AAA
I dont think pokemon is a good example. Lets not forget almost every pokemon game out there outsold every other contender on its genre (ie: pokken, pokemon go). It's just the franchise power
It's not dead. There are still tons of tb jrpg out there (trails, smt, EO). Ppl just dont bother with them, unless the game is made by Squenix or has persona on its title.

civ is not RPG.
But.... Jrpg turn based battle system really needs new innovation (which is why i applaud BD). After playing divinity:original sin, jrpg tb combat system feels archaic to me.
Let's see. Square Enix alone has released a turn based game this year and has 2 in production set to release in 2017. Then there is Persona, another high profile one. Oh yes and that niche game called Pokemon.
Doesn't seem that dead to me.
