I think the 72 hours is in-game, which is 1.5 real hours. Tabata mentioned 30 in-game days (15 hours) in an interview once, but I think he was referring to doing the boss fight early in the game when you're low level.

Oh, so the guy in Clueless Gamer was just joking?

I think he just misheard them, thought they meant 72 real hours instead of 72 in-game hours. I can't say for sure though. Hopefully somebody with a leaked copy will shed some light on that boss fight soon. I do know that only the most dedicated of people will do a 72 hour boss fight, that would be ridiculous even if you could save during the fight. 1.5 real hours I can handle on easy difficulty I'm sure, anything longer and I doubt I'll bother.

It's an optional boss, as I'm right at the end of the game and haven't run across it.

I will say that I'm a bit disappointed.  It's my first Final Fantasy since FFX (outside of playing some Realm Reborn, which I enjoyed, but MMOs aren't really my thing).  The open world stuff is mostly a bore, and though the story finally picks up in the back half, it's not really enough to overcome the sense of repetition, since everything boils down to "Pick up quest, go to X location, kill Y number of creatures."  It's Skyrim through a JRPG lens, and it doesn't really work.

And I'm really hating the chapter I'm on.  Backtracking + jump scares = no bueno.
