It makes several compromises to get there (both in visuals and general design), arguably to the detriment of the title itself, but on a purely visual level it's outstanding. I wouldn't say it's the best overall technical package this gen, in-fact i think you could solid arguments in favour of other sub-1080p titles beating it on that front, but within its narrow focus (looking pretty) it excels. |
What visual compromises, specifically? The only ones I noticed were the 800p resolution, and 30fps.

'Visually' should be 'technically', sorry. I was highlighting how everything 1886 excels at is due to how it maintains a very strict technical focus. To give a couple of examples of what i did mean though:
The individual instances of physics it lets you play around with are superb, but they're also incredibly controlled. Most games will present you with average individual instances of physics, with the expectation that there will be points that the player pusher the physics engine in a fashion that justifies the averageness of the individual instances (this is obviously especially true of many open world titles). 1886 does everything in its power to avoid that situation. It wants the physics presented to you to be as good as possible, and they ensure the level is built (both technically and in general design) in a fashion that ensure you won't push it beyond the point presented. That same stratagy is used as the compromise for many of its other visual elements too.
Another, as you mention, is resolution. I don't personally have a problem with their decision (the logic behind it perhaps, but not the end result), but trading screen space so you don't have to compromise on image quality or in-game visuals is perhaps the best example of how strict their technical focus was. They had a visual goal, and everything came second to that.
Overall, i think 1886 is pretty sub-average. I have no problem with low-interactivity games, but they seem to have forgotten that visuals (much like music, and sometimes even gameplay) are a tool, and tools have to be properly justified. Still, i might not believe it justified the tools it created, but god damn did they make a pretty box of screwdrivers :p
