Forums - Sony - My PS4 pro review

So now that the fuzz of PS4 pro has come to pass I would like to share my review with you guys. I have the PS4 pro for exactly a week now and I mainly played Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted 4. Both games look significantly better, although the first has had a way bigger upgrade than the latter. Performance wise the PS4 pro is as quite as a console can be. So finally I can play Uncharted 4 among thieves without the feeling a jumbo jet engine is firing up inside my PS4. I am not overly sensitive for frameratedrops ( I don't regonize small drops to 29 from 30fps) nor do I hate 30fps to begin with, even though 60fps is a bit better. I have a Samsung Hu8550 with the SEK 3500U to play games and UHD blu ray with a panasonic UHD blu ray player in HDR. My TV is a mixed bag for HDR on the bright side my black level is low enough 0.05 nits, I have a 10 bit panel and my tv covers at least 85% of the P3 colour space (cinema). On the downside my tv maxes out at 400 nits and 85% of the P3 colourspace is not nearly as big as the rec 2020 colour space, so let's call it SDR+ or MDR. The native resolution of my tv is 2160p and boy do games and movies look good in that resolution.

As I told you my TV is MDR so not all the advantages of HDR are probably visible the way they are intended to. However especially the darker scenes and shadow detail in either Uncharted 4 in the caves in chapter 8 and in Ratchet and Clank contain way more details when HDR mode is on. The skies also look way better in HDR, since they contain way more detail just like in every UHD Blu Ray when played in HDR compared to a SDR downgrade. Effects also have way more impact since regular blu rays and games to I guess only go as high as 120nits. In HDR mode lights and the sky and the flashes from explosions appear to be much brighter than without SDR. Ratchet and Clank also has way deeper and brighter colours in HDR mode while Uncharted 4 is lightning mostly looks way more natural in HDR than SDR mode. So having said that an MDR TV that supports and decodes the format and makes use of it to the limits of it's tech does enjoy a significant boost using HDR mode in games and UHD movies.

The resolution boost is very visible in both games ground textures and particles contain way more detail, the little dust particles in Uncharted 4 seem to be way more present in 2160p mode. And even though 1440p is quite a stretch from 2160p (50% of the pixel count) it looks very clear and even the small flies which are flying around lamps contain way more detail. Although I have to stress this you tv needs to at least able support the HDR format in being able to read it, to make the picture actully look great. As for Ratchet and Clank everything looks brighter, more detailed, picture seems to have more depth and 1080p SDR loks dull compared to 2160p HDR mode. I managed to sell my old PS4 with 8 games for €250 and bought a pro for €379 so for me the €129 and the added space for new games was worth it. Wifi is also quite a bit faster on the PRO and I have an extra 500GB of memory.  Overall I am very content with the pro and I like the idea of midtherm upgrades in console cycles as long as they happen once in 3 or 4 years and not every 2 years. The only downside of the pro is, that the console isn't verry pretty it slowly grows on me but still. Anyway that is a small detail overall I can recommend a pro to everyone with a tv which supports 2160p and the HDR format in some way. I would give it a 8.5/10.
