GoldenEye 007 as guessed by Entropio

The highest placed first-person shooter on the list is placed this high for a reason. 'GoldenEye' was of course groundbreaking and it is without a doubt the shooter which I had the most fun with. Sure, time took it's toll on this game, but when judging a personal list of "Greatest Games of All-time", the 'fun-factor' is a big piece of the pie. Usually, games based on movies are terrible, but among them, there's at least one that shines high.

The game consists of a list of levels each with a couple of objectives following the events of the movie, but taking liberties where it helps the gameplay and pacing. The development team took many, and clearly had fun in their process. They even modeled the faces of the enemies after themselves! The single-player mode takes plenty of time to complete, but the game also includes an amazing multiplayer. This influential mode puts players against each other in a death match in levels based on both GoldenEye as well as other Bond movies.

For the single-player, the game also included the public secret of the cheat codes. Unlike your usual cheat code, most of these were of little real help to the player, but they were fun additions instead like having every character having a big head and long ape-like arms like Donkey Kong or every weapon shooting paintballs. My parents used to make me use the paintball cheat, because the reddish stains were obviously too much to see for my young self.

#17: The final boss's final form in this game is only beatable by an unlikely weapon, especially considering the impressive display some of the others give.

Mega Man 2?

Mega Man 2?

Indeed!

Fast guesses all around lately.

#18 Fire Emblem Fates

After the somewhat dissapointing Fire Emblem Awakening, I wasn't expecting Fates to be that good, glad it proved me wrong, Conquest and Revelation specifically fix almost every issue with Awakening, it has challenging and well designed maps, a more balanced pair up system, memorable characters and a solid story, Birthright is more of the same issues with Awakening, minus the forgettable story. All of this makes for my favorite game in the 3DS so far and my favorite game of 2016.

Hint 21 - This story tells of a young man in a mercenary group, who must quickly fill up some shoes to take lead. He and his merry band take on a small job, which eventually becomes much bigger than he expected. Entering a battle between man and beast, this hero with blue hair and a golden blade will rise to end the true evil king who started this all.

Hint 20 - It seems I've fallen far down and can't get back up. I guess I'll just take the long way and make some weird friends along the way. Or, you could just kill them all...

Hint 19 - Jump into the crazy brawl, grab whatever you can and throw it at your enemies, and be sure to grab those stones. They'll make you POWERFUL! It also has an ethnically diverse cast of characters, from samurai, to ninja, to a cowboy, to even a... native american character?

Hint 18 - Move to the beat of the music and smash on those steps, but not the usual up, down, left, right ones...

21 - Sounds like a Fire Emblem game.

19 - Power Stone.

Since nobody's guessed my #18 yet, here's the hint again:

A PS1 JRPG originally released on the Sega Saturn about 2 years earlier. Contains some rather weak voice acting

Grandia.

Yeah, 21 is indeed a FE game, and 19 is not Power Stone, but 2.

#17: It's k________ time!

#16: You've played its levels for 30 years, now it's time to create them!

#15: This game is excellent, but it nerfed one of the franchise classic modes.

19 – Super Mario 64

As I’ve said before, my list is pretty subjective. I think that SM64, with its tight controls and great level design, is one of the N64 games that have aged better and if I were trying to do an “objective” list it would probably be in the top 5. But back in the day, although I liked it – and felt impressed the first time I saw it – it wasn’t one of my favorite games on the console. Every time I replay it, though – or its DS remake (even with the D-PAD controls the game’s still great)- I find it better.

Super Mario 64 was truly revolutionary, the first “real” 3-D platformer and the game that showcased the need of an analogical stick in the 3-D world. It’s influence in gaming design has been immense. But it wasn’t only a pioneering game; it’s also brilliant in every detail: from the mission based levels (that change slightly each time you replay them to get a different star) to the incredible hub that was the castle and the iconic soundtrack. The re-imagination of all the elements of the Mario franchise in order to adapt it to the 3-D environment is impressive, and it’s difficult to believe that it was done so well.

When I’ve forgotten almost everything about other games I played through the years, I still remember some details of SM64, like the first time I found that “Ness-like” monster inside the underground level, or the owl you find in the second level. If I re-do this list next year, I’m pretty sure that SM64 will be some positions up.
