Forums - Gaming - your controversial opinion about "one of the best games ever made"

Ocarina of Time is really boring (90% of 3D Zeldas are). The Last of Us is really boring. Shovel Knight is fine (the music is exceptional, tho).

I don't agree with this opinion, and many have this opinion. I don't agree because it was the first, so saying "filled with better options" is not fair when you're the pioneer and the creator of the whole concept. It's easy to imitate and add ideas to a concept that you don't have to create from the scratch. Also, in terms of movements not a single platformer from that time had a character as fluid and responsive as mario. The only 3d platformer from that time that could be beside mario 64 is Rayman 2, banjo and kazooie was cool because of the exploration, the whole platforming mechanic was a mess, just like donkey kong 64.

It's neither the pionner much less the creator of anything, just what made it well known.

Sony PS1 was what made CDs popular on gaming and set an standard, but it didnt pioneered or created it, as a similar example.

Seriously, people think Nintendo invented so many things that they didn't.

Anyway, if it that was the case, which it isn't, the point would still be the same, even on its own generation it had games leaps and bounds better than it, and calling it one of or the very best game of all time is just absurd, IMO of course. The exaggeration around it is huge.

As another example, a good 2D platformer as Rayman got and even better 3D game with Rayman 2 that was and still is a joy to play, that's one 5th gen 3D platformer that should be placing higher that Mario 64 on people's list and a true gem of that generation, it was also on the N64 as Banjo and Conker and it drives me sad to see N64 onwers ignore them so much compared to Mario 64.

show me another game with real 3d movement before mario 64, from the playstation or from any system. then your argument is going to be valid.

Limbo.

I played it and was bored about 30 minutes in. Dark and edgy didn't make it more fun than Rayman or other 2D platformers out there.

Resistance 3. This game was supposed to be back in form and people praised it for being better than two. I played it and walked away confused.

- The story was lazy and didn't go anywhere. It felt like just another episode.

- No set pieces or amazing boss fights like the second.

- Everything felt dull and the entire art style was depressing.

- No co-op unlike the previous game.

- No amazing moments like the zombie suburb or the cinema in the second game.

never played a resistance game, i don't know why but i don't see the good things

Sorry, don't mean to butt into your debate, but I think Jumping Flash on the PS1 predates Mario 64. I prefer Mario 64, but if the question is as to which came first, I don't think it was Mario.

I played a bit of the first but didn't get into it. loved the second, hated the third. I'm one of those odd people as you can see who has a dislike for quite a few of the trending games lol

The last of us, good story, avarage gameplay, a lot of repetitive situations. Not bad, but not the best game ever.

As much as I loved GOW 2, 3 and ascension, I thought the first game was overrated. I preferred the movement, combat, platforming and puzzles in Pop:SoT over those in GOW. If anything, I found parts of GOW to be annoying:

- such as a puzzle where the spikes come out of the floor and you have to move this crate in time or die.

- Or the section where you have to beat all the enemies before the floor opens and kills you.

- Or the section where you have to move these shaped blocks into the wall (I put them all in, but either the game glitched or a pillar had to be moved slightly although visibly they were all set).

- let's not forget the journey out of hell with those rotating pillars of doom!

GTA 5. Grand Theft Auto? More like

Super Mario 64 without a single doubt.
An average to good 3D platformer in a gen filled with way, way better options and coming from an exceptional 2D platformer masterpiece as Super Mario World, is exalted as one of and as the very best game by a lot of people not only from its genre or gen but of all time.
There is not a single game that comes remotely close to being as overrated as it is.

It's a matter of timing: SM64 heralded the industry's transition from 2d to 3d gaming and what better franchise than Mario, an icon of 2d gaming, to do this? Also cemented the need for thumbsticks in future controllers thereafter. 3d gaming to this day needs them.

I HATED the ending to The Last of Us.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."
