PS4 Pro Leaks Reportedly Forced Microsoft’s Hand With Project Scorpio Unveiling

Prior to E3 2016, the string of PS4 Pro leaks prompted Microsoft into unveiling the Project Scorpio, despite having only shown it behind closed doors to a handful of developers.

That’s according to a new report from Windows Central, claiming that the general buzz surrounding Sony’s Pro system — then known as PlayStation Neo — forced Microsoft’s hand, in many ways. Further in the piece, the outlet then goes on to suggest Scorpio will run UWP (Universal Windows Platform) games available today in native 4K, with Gears of War 4 and Forza Horizon 3 among the prime candidates.

As part of its mission to brings its platforms closer together, it’s said that developers need only make some “trivial” changes so that a UWP game is compatible with Scorpio. Development kits, meanwhile, are being designed as a “one-stop shop” for devs, who will be able to test their game across different configurations.

Elsewhere, a separate report from GamesBeat reveals that Microsoft spent big during the month of October, dumping $39.9 million across 16 commercials in anticipation of the PS4 Pro launch. Sony, by contrast, spent an estimated $12.1 million across 11 commercials.

Will this have much of a bearing on the PS4 Pro’s November 10 launch? For our verdict on Sony’s mid-gen hardware upgrade, have a gander at our review.

I don't think there is any doubt. They "revealed" a console more than 1 year out, which is kind of ridiculous. It was pure damage control and they went into full media blitz in order to curtail PS4P adoption. It's as obvious as potato salad.

Sometimes I wonder if the unveiling of Scorpio's specs resulted in Sony not unveiling the Pro at E3.

Without doubt.

Every other week we get Phil or Major Nelson reminding us that they are giving X1 the Pro treatment. It's kinda obvious at this point.

Nice Avy.

I am not surprised. It was revealed way early. Worst gen for Microsoft.

Why would a console that doesn't come out in a year be any thread to an existing product? Looks like PS4 Pro is doing pretty good. I mean it's a PS4, but better. You don't even have to advertise it for people to run out and buy it.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Thanks, I wonder how she feels!
