Forums - Gaming - Japan is really obsessed with Western names and mythology

Anyone know Goetia: The Lesser Key of Solomon the King?

This book seems like a bible to Japanese devs, not only game devs but also anime creators.

Look how many times the names are referenced. Almost every major JRPG series has referenced it from FF to Wild Arms to  Golden Sun. Really, like 90% of media on there is Japanese.

Searched for Western RPGs like Witcher and Dragon Age but they don't reference them.

This is just one example of many. There's just too much of this "cool sounding foreign" stuff in my animes and games, it just comes off as pretentious and lack of creativity. How awesome would it be if they used names from lesser known mythologies like the Inuit, or how about they stopped referencing mythological names and personifications and instead invent their own thing.

The last Japanese RPG I played that didn't have ridiculous characters wearing ridiculous names was maybe the old Phantasy Star games, just down to earth names like Rolf, Wren, Rika, Nei, Amy... Practical and realistic.

The perfect analogy, as characters names got more complex (so did their clothes and designs), the more interest dwindled in JRPGs.

Around the Network

The problem is that most Shinto youkais are really really lame. I think it's nice that they borrow a lot from other mythologies. Western games usually lock themselves into just one mythology and it gets boring. While in any given FF you will find egyptian, greece, norse, chinese, christian, hundu and a lot of obscure stuff within just one game.

I mean why not? it's certainly more creative than any given GoW game.
