Sony owns a great deal of Square stock, I don't think Sony would allow it.
Yes it would be great if Nintendo made Square sign the exclusivity agreements they had back in the NES days...
When I think Squaresoft I think Epic and RPG... I don't think teaming up with Nintendo would be such a good idea at this day in age :x Maybe good for business >_>;;; but I'd feel skrewed as a consumer xD

Why screwed?
Square-Enix by themselves have lost most of their talent and staff over the last couple years. Even the director of FFXII left Square-Enix to work for Nintendo. This could probably be the best thing to ever happen to Square.
Also, Square owes a great deal to Sony for bailing them out after The Spirit Within disaster... I suspect that's why they are still supporting Sony even though it has clearly lost market leadership.

Around 8%. I'm not sure i'd consider that a lot of it.
It used to be a great deal around... 20%. However then they merged with Enix. Which was worth more then Square. So that 20% of stock dropped to 8%.
If anything, sony support would be do to giving sony the benefit of the doubt for pushing FF7 worldwide by covering the publishing costs, and helping when their movie bombed.

Ahh but I don't think they've gone all that far downhill :P I thought FFXII was brilliant ^^ SEVERELY lacking on the story front >_>;;; but combat dynamics, graphics and all that other good stuff was still plenty amazing lol. Now my roomates and I are addicted to FF: Crisis Crack and I'm hoping that the PS3 ends up getting Star Ocean IV. Not to mention my high hopes for FFXIII and Versus, which are lined up to be absolutely amazing ^^
I just don't think Nintendo consoles are very suited for SE's style of work. At least not on the RPG front :x
