Forums - Gaming - DLC isn’t about squeezing money from consumers, it’s about “over-delivering”

According to Take Two Boss Strauss Zelnick, DLC isn’t about nickel-and-diming consumers though. It’s not about pure profit. It’s about over-delivering. Yes, really.

“I think with DLC, the focus of this company is over-delivering to our consumers. With Mafia III for example there will be free content updates coming. Rockstar Games has launched a lot of free content for GTA Online,” Zelnick said in the company’s investor call.

“Our focus here is not trying to extract the last nickel from our customers. To the contrary, our focus is to deliver vastly more value than what we charge for. We think that creates extraordinary loyalty for our brands, our labels and for our company’s products. And ultimately, over-delivering for our consumers equilibrates with over-delivering for shareholders.”

To be fair, some DLC is really great and can be viewed as another form of expansion packs, similar to StarCraft's Brood War, WoW is built on them, and there are many, many more examples. DLC is (some times) just another way of delivering these kind of experiences. Others are really about nickel-and-diming the consumer though. They really are. Most microtransactions is all about this.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Over-delivering to shareholders I can kind of agree.

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

thats how its supposed to work.... reality is it doesnt often.

I don't know about Rockstar but some developers are starting to nail DLC. In those cases, it's become a real boon to the industry. Fallout 4 DLC has extended my enjoyment of that game significantly. First time I've ever bought a Season Pass and it was worth every penny.

I really would like to see the same happen all across the line. When DLC is done right, it adds a lot of value.

Have to actually come up with a rebutall for Take 2, as they're a shining example of great support for their games.

Are you being sarcastic or not? I can't tell.

Completely serious. GTA Online is one of the biggest success stories of the this generation due to the fact that they keep releasing free updates that bring people back into the game.

My comment was somewhat sarcastic going along with the PR speak, but he's not lying with his statement.

why would you think he's being sarcastic?

we've had free dlc for gta online since launch... that's 3 years

sure a lot of it is overpriced in game but it can all be earned through just playing the game
