Forums - Gaming - Have console game prices become unreasonable?

I think $60 for a PS3/360 game is no more unreasonable than $50 for a PS2 launch-era game. The value of the dollar has taken a huge dive, so really the prices aren't bad. Especially considering how many games released new at over $50 in the cartridge era. Virtua Racing for Genesis even hit $100, while games like Chrono Trigger and Phantasy Star 4 were in the $85 range. Really, we're not at all bad off. Heck, in terms of actual value relative to inflation a launch PS3 was less ridiculously priced than a launch Atari 2600, and the 40 GB is in a similar neighborhood to the NES's launch price when adjusted for inflation.

However, I thought the price of games in 2000 ($50) was too much to justify many purchases, and I thought the same for a long time before that. $50 now, though, is a little less bad, and the Wii is doing a great deal make poor quality developers like EA suffer for trying to charge as much for an annual re-hash as a AAA title. And it's also giving companies willing to charge less a home.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

If PS3 and 360 games were significantly cheaper then it would be far more risky to make big budget games for them. Then again it would also vindicate the beliefs some people on the forums have that big budget games are extremely risky and shouldn't be made for PS3 and 360 and instead everything should be made for the Wii (well except for big budget games for the PC, they're fine with that).
