Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Phil Spencer Says Xbox One Isn't As Big In Japan Due to Preferring Games Like Persona 5 or Nioh

For any Japanese developer's sake, it's a good idea never to have an exclusive title on a MS system. Sakaguchi found out the hard way with Lost Odyssey despite the luck the 360 had at the beginning of the 7th gen against the PS3. It sold ok relatively speaking...but definitely nothing to be cheerful for. A HUGE step back from the sales his FF games were selling. What exactly is Sakaguchi even doing nowadays? Exactly.

I really wish he would come back to developing JRPGs for a Sony system but I heard he had a falling out or something.

I follow him on his Twitter. Sakaguchi is the kind of developer that doesn't like Triple A games. For him, it is better to release small-middle sized games. The last game that he made was a mobile game (had a good number of downloads, 2.5+ millions). And now he is working with a company in a secret project that seems to be more focused on Art-style. I don't know if it is for Mobile or PC,Console.

Sakaguchi had his studio founded by Microsoft, so he released 2 exclusives( he would release 3, but the 3 was cancelled). In one of those games, he had the help of the character design, and creator of Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama. The last time they worked together was on Chrono Trigger, if I remember well.

Sakaguchi release also "Last History" for the Wii. He also said that he is the kind of developer that dislikes sequels. Will be very hard to see Sakaguchi working on a sequel. because of that , Final Fantasy has a different plot and gameplay in every single game.

What would be the point in gaining Japan. You will only get around 6-7 million sales lifetime in Japan at best. Look at Sony. They aren't doing too well their either.

Lol "just 6-7 millions lifetime". Did you know that, with the exception of the UK, this will be much more than the Xbox One will ever sell on the entire european continent ?

Nonsense. Its completely necessary. Its already been shown time and again that they will ignore the Xbox One in favor of just doing a PlayStation version, or maybe a Vita version. If MS gets the ball rolling, and show that their games can be made on Xbox One with little extra effort, and that its a extra market for their products, then they might start doing it themselves. But until then MS needs to step up.

Besides Sony already does this and nobody complains.

Extra effort? It SHOULD take less effort to put their games on Xbox One than port games PS3 or Vita. PS4 and X1 have similar specs and arcitecture, unlike PS3 and Vita.

If countless indie studios can support both PS4 and X1, then so can Japanese studios. Ignoring Xbox is ignoring a signficiant western audience, go figure.

Well, maybe when their games brake the million mark on other consoles and struggle to sell a few thousands on the Xbox One, this won't help the Xbox.

Japanese games will not sell on xbox even if MS get games like persona. The fanbase for those games is just not on the MS console, so devs won't waste their time on it. They won't see profit if they do it.

It is just like Nintendo's third party support. People need time in order to purchase the console. Everyone expect Microsoft to release a few Japanese games, or none, and then drop the support. This is a thing that you need to build up during an entire generation.

This so much. Japan isn't that huge into console gaming anyways.

Not only has console gaming seen a decline, but dedicated mobile gaming device have also plunged.

Let Nintendo and Sony battle for that market. Its a small region with niche taste not worth fighting for.

It is one of the world's biggest country for consoles. Sony exclusives and multiplataform western games sold more on Japan alone than the games that Microsoft tried to launch in the USA.

Getting more games that no one really cares about except a niche group that is continuingly shrinking.

Persona 5 outsold Quantum break in FW, in Japan only vs worldwide

Yet Halo 5 will outsell Persona lifetime in it's first month alone. On a smaller install base as well. 25m xbox one vs ps3 + ps4 install base (about 150 million units). Go figure. Maybe it's best to focus on games that appeal to western audience because that is where the money is. Not Japan.

The smaller european countries hardly buy games. I can brag about how well Xbox is doing in Latin America (outdoing PS4), but it doesn't mean jack. The reason North America and UK matters a lot more is the software attach ratio is a lot bigger. A lot of those smaller european countries can only afford maybe one game a year. Why do you think Sony released the PS4 first in North America over Japan (their home country).

I think at this point even 0.5m sales in Japan will be great for them

Persona 5 is the biggest jrpg-masterpiece in the last and next years. Cant wait of february !!! < 3

good japanese games are important for xbox, but Yakuza Zero, Kingdom Hearts 2.5 Collection, Ni-Oh, Persona 5 and Tales of Berseria coming only for PS4 in the first 2017-quarter. i think, phil spencer want the big games from japan in future. But.. the chance is not big in my opinion. Nier Automata, Shenmue 3, Death Stranding and World of Final Fantasy are coming for PS4 too, but not for X1. That is a big problem.

Because of this post, I'm cancelling my P5 pre order. thanks.

Germany, one of the most wealthy european countries, house of the biggest gaming event outside of E3(Gamescom) the one that Microsoft seems to care very much. PS4 sold more there than on the UK(4 european countries), has 70-73+% of Market share while Wii U  and Xbox One fight for the other 20-17% (Wii U has atleast 1-3% more total market share than the Xbox One).

France is also a big european country with more than 70% of PS4 market share (I think that the PS4 is close, or already surpassed, 3 millions there).

Isn't Spain a bigger  gaming market than Canada or Mexico ? PS4 also has a good share there.

By the goddess, I live in Latin America and I can say that there isn't a way to know how well each console is selling(maybe in Mexico). Microsoft and Sony releases overpriced products in Latin America. Just to make an example. It is more worth for someone to purchase a ticket, go to the USA, purchase a PS4/Xbox One and then come back, than purchasing a 900-1100US$ in Argentina or an 2100-2300US$ at launch on Brazil. They were selling imported ones for 1/7-1/5 of the price.

In Latin America, the imported market is so big that there isn't a way to know exactly the sales of a console, unless it launched at a fair price. But they usually launch multiple times more expensive than the USA's version. But I'm sure that the Xbox One hasn't an advantage in any country like the one that the PS4 has in Europe.

I don't know why people compare the European countries (dozens of countries) against Japan. Or when people compare the UK (4 countries) against a single country. UK and Japan's console numbers, home console, are nearly equal, 1 Country against 4. So, how is one irrelevant and the other is so important ?
