Forums - Gaming - I want to talk about Beyond Good and Evil 2's artstyle

Okay, so this has been on my mind ever since Michel Ancel started posting new teasers for BG&E2 on Instagram. It's the artsyle, man. What have they done to it? It looks bland and doesn't feel like Beyond Good and Evil to me, which is making me pretty sad because this is a game I've been really looking forward to ever since I played the original game.

When I think about Beyond Good and Evil, I think about its great character design and cartoony/hand-painted artstyle, which for a 2003 game still looks pretty good nowadays in my opinion:

Now, compare it to the new concept art:

Now, before anyone says it I know concept art doesn't reflect how the final product will be most of the time, but seeing as the teaser from years ago also had this realistic art, I don't think they will change it before the game comes out. Anyways, I feel that the new game has lost a big part of what made the first game special, and this has probably happened to try and sell the game to the "hardcore" audience, which I don't think will help sell this game to that crowd at all, but we'll see. I also think the animal characters look "off" too, they have human feet and hands now and it just looks weird.

Well, my "rant" ends here.

Please share your opinion on this guys, I really want to read them!

Not sure. I'm conflicted. I like the "next gen" look but it seems to be at the expense of all of the charm.

Yeah, conflicted is pretty much how I'm feeling about this. On one hand I'm super excited that the game will finally come out, but on the other I'm rather disappointed that they took this route. Here's hoping that it will still be a great game regardless of the artstyle it ends up having.

Let's hope that Ancel won't need long to show some gameplay.

Art style is very important to me and can help make a game both look great AND run at 60 fps. Hopefully this new game takes advantage of the benefits of art style over high polygon counts and high-res textures.

It looks more mature in art style because that is what sells. Sadly, its how things are now. The game wouldn't have been green lit otherwise.

That's why I hoped that the rumors about Nintendo funding it were true, that way they could make the game the way they wanted. But sadly that doesn't seem to be the case anymore, and it seems this game is only being greenlit now because of the whole "Vivendi trying to take over" deal.

I'm not worried yet. I feel the art is ok from what we have seen so far. Whats left ot be seen is how atmospheric it will be. Thats when I will either get worried or live it.

I looks A LOT like the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

I was fine with this:

It still felt like BG&E, despite different art style.
