I figured this was probably the case when Amazon suddenly announced they had way more pre-orders on hand yesterday. Either they cancelled those that had pre-ordered multiples and held off until launch day, or most likely, Sony had told them they would likely be getting more bundles and individual units by launch day, but it wasn't certain until they got the stock at their warehouses the other day.
Either way, I'm super excited for VR. I've been thoroughly convinced that the future of gaming is not in GPUs, processors, and buzzwords that barely anybody actually understands related to overall system power. The only way forward is to change the way we play, and that's why, even if current VR ends up only as a fad, it's one I will be happy to have taken part in as the first real step towards establishing the future of gaming. If you're still convinced that gaming will always be sitting on a couch, five feet away from a TV with controller in hand, tons of visual noise in your peripheral vision shattering immersion, then you don't have enough of a vision about what the future of gaming truly holds.
I doubt we'll be going full Sword Art Online full dive or Accel World seamless AR anytime soon, but those are the types of reality we are capable of realizing as gaming tech moves forward.
