Forums - Gaming - Daydream VR live blog: New Google virtual reality headset to launch 4 October

Welp, I have the Gear VR so this should be interesting. What I will be interested in is which phones will work with it. Cause I believe there is this rumor that virtually all phones prior to the new Pixel phones aren't supported which if true sounds stupid to me unless the resolution of the Pixel phones is like 4k. Cause the Galaxy S7 International variant with its Exynos CPU is far ahead of the Snapdragon 821 that is shipping with the Pixel phones. And of course, it has the best AmoLED display out there. So I will be interested to see wtf is this all about.

looks like having an OLED screen might be a requirement for phones to be daydream compatible - all 3 phones with confirmed support use one

and that makes a lot of sense as LCDs can't do "low persistence" which brings a lot more clarity to the picture in VR when turning quickly

Mobile VR will be the future but not in the current plugin shape. True platform independence will only be achieved with a standalone headset that includes hardware and screen. The software is streamed or installed from PC or mobile or directly from the internet. That is definitely a thing I'm gonna buy day one.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

"So far, these are the two phones confirmed to wear a Daydream Ready badge:
Asus Zenfone 3 Deluxe
ZTE Axon 7"

See this is what I mean. Why are these two phones are DayDream Ready but not a Galaxy S7 even though a Galaxy S7 already can do VR???

Samsung probably doesn't want to support Daydream, as it competes with their Gear VR platform

Yea but isn't DayDream just basically an app that you can install from the PlayStore? Even if Samsung doesn't want it, I don't get why it can't support it.

This. even google cardboard works on samsung phones so id imagine this should too. Maybe the new phones have something build into them that makes them work better with vr or something?

Yea maybe. We shall see tomorrow but from the hardware specs alone compared to the phones that already have the badge, The Galaxy S7 International version rekts them. Heck, the Zenfone 3 Deluxe has a 1080p screen vs Galaxy S7's 1440p. I don't get how Zenfone 3 can support it but S7 can't from the resolution alone.

the rumors say there is a headset component which comes in at ~$30 and the app will partly have free stuff and partly be a store

there is the problem, Samsung want to sell their own headset at ~$99 and want people to use their own Gear VR store with it

You will come home connect your phone to your PS5, PC,XBTwo,NX etc and pop it into your goggles and play your VR or AR console games.

I come home now and pop my Galaxy S7 into my Gear VR Oculus and play games and watch videos. Yes it is awsome.

But the S7 has a Amoled quad HD screen that eliminates the screen door effect. The Google headset will take some newer Andriod phones only. Plus Samsung has a crap ton of games and other content ready to go now. I think Google will be playing catchup in this market.

Hey! They got SONY on my amiibo! Wait a minute. Two great gaming tastes that game great together!

Well I hope they don't intentionally block it cause that would be craycray
