Forums - Gaming - Gears on blu ray

Not to put the PS3 down but the game is using Unreal Engine 3, actually an enhanced version of it called Unreal Engine 3.5, and the engine simply runs better on the 360. Considering this game will likely push it harder than any game has in the past it could have nasty framerate issues on the PS3.

Also there's nothing stopping the game from being bigger this time around on the 360 as disc space != game time. The game could be on one dual layer DVD disc and still take twice as long to complete. And there's nothing stopping them from using 2 dual layer DVDs if they have issues with space for the game.

Finally it really wouldn't make sense for Epic to build the game around a blu-ray disc because the PS3 would never be able to sell as many copies of the game as the 360. The game simply seems to appeal to the 360 fanbase a lot more.

Gears of War 2 has as much chance as MGS 4 being ported = no chance

according to rumors there are really 360 discs in the box for mgs4

IGN claimed they've played it. and they will show a video of it very soon. And they called every doubter to "suck it hard". :)

I do not trust IGN. Gamepro are far more credible than IGN and 1up. I will believe it if MGS 4 gets launched on XBox 360 if not its a lie.

I hope no one minds if I stir things up a little, but what would you think if Gears of war 2 was on blu ray. I loved gears; a beautiful game with great gameplay, but it had one flaw: it was too short. It took me and most people around 5 hours to beat the game. So if it was on a duel layer blu ray disk, you would have in theory enough room to make the game 20 hours or so. Would you not want that?

We have already seen that Blu-Ray has no relevance to game length at all. Bioshock was 25 hours long on one DVD9. Gears was 8-10 hours long on hardcore on a DVD9. Heavenly Sword, the PS3's biggest hitter last year, was 5 hours long with no multiplayer on Blu-Ray.

Uncharted was an adventure game and even it was only 10 hours long.

Fail.

bioshock was 25 hours long, but it also had no multiplayer. and dotn even say heavenly sword was the ps3's biggest game last year.

Honestly, I realize that Gears will never come to the PS3 and you're right about the fact that it would appeal to 360 owners more, but I can pretty much garentee that Gears 2 will not be very long, perhaps shorter and it will be due to the lack of storage space. I'm also pretty sure that the first game was on a duel layer dvd. Anyway, one thing about you're first statement, Gears 2 would run perfectly on the PS3. Unreal tournament 3 ran without any framerate issues and the additions to the third engine (destructible environments, more enemies on screen...) are all tasks that the cpu's will handle. I will also reiterate that the PS3 has 8 cores running at 3.2 GHz which is more than enough for anything. The general look of the game isn't going to change drastically and I'm using the first engine to the second as proof. They essentially looked the same. The only time the PS3 has framerate issues is when developers like EA get lazy when porting titles.

Unreal Tournament 3 was slowed down for the PS3. Gears of War 3 is actually going to push UE3 hard. Look people can brag up the Cell all they want but it doesn't change the fact that the engine runs better on 360 even after the Sony moneyhat and all the extra work Epic did trying to get the engine to run at good as it does on the 360.

Also if the game was on PS3 instead it would likely take an extra 8 months or longer to come out (and that's if they got it up to what the 360 version would have been like).  I want the game in 2008, not late 2009 or early 2010.  I'm just not into the whole PS3 wait game: "Play next year what people are playing on 360 this year.".  I mean PS3 players are getting excited over a glorified racing demo when the full rival game on the 360 was released last year.

The game length all has to do with how much time and effort a developer puts into a game.  You bring up a good point about bioshock's length, but keep in mind it doesn't use texture streaming while Gears does, therefore, every level in Gears takes up about a gig of space. It also didn't have an online mode. I beat Gears in 5 hours on hardcore while most others did the same. The insane difficulty doubles the game's length so I'm going to assume you meant to use that otherwise you're full of shit. Uncharted used texture streaming aswell but naughty dog didn't feel like creating a longer game so they just fit all of the languages on one disc while allowing the game to be longer because of blu-ray. You also forget that Resistance was 15 hours long and Ratchet and Clank Future was 20 hours long. Both of those wouldn't be possible on a DVD.

The framerate for UT3 was locked at 30 fps and it's going to be the same on the 360. The superior version of that game is on the PC where it can be maxed out but not locked at 60 fps. Aside from that one debatable statement everything after you said can't be proved. Go ahead, name one game on the 360 you're playing right now that I have to wait for. ( BTW I really don't have to wait for anything because I have a 360 as well.) One last thing, do you really think Polyphony Digital gives a shit about when Forza motorsport 2 is released? GT5 is in a league of its own partially because of the extra time they have taken so Forza hasn't rivaled crap.

Didn't N'Gai say that GoW 3 would be multiplatform since Microsoft won't be publishing it? So there you go, just wait for Gears 3 in 2010
